Student Organizations Promote Diversity in the Profession

Student affinity organizations will salute diversity across the legal profession and within the Philadelphia bar during the school’s first Diversity Awareness Week March 2-9.

The week will get started on March 2 with Celebrating Diversity in the Bar, a reception featuring a welcome from Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Rudolph Garcia. A shareholder with Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney, Garcia is the first Hispanic chancellor of the PBA. The reception will allow students to meet other attorneys and jurists who represent the diversity within the Philadelphia bar. The event is being organized by the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association, the Black Law Students Association, the Jewish Law Students Association, the Latin American Law Student Association, the Middle Eastern Law Students Association, the Multicultural Law Students Association and OUTLAW. The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Gallery.

On March 7, the Jewish Law Students Association will sponsor a lunchtime discussion on Marriage and Divorce in Jewish Law. The event takes place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Room 420.

Also on March 7, OUTLAW will host a talk by Judge Daniel Anders of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Exact time and location will be updated soon. 

On March 8, the Latin American Law Students Association will sponsor a panel discussion, Crimmigration Law: An Exploration of the Convergence of Criminal Law and Immigration Law. The panel, moderated by Professor Anil Kalhan, will feature presentations by Yolanda Vazquez, a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania Law School; Wayne Sachs, an immigration attorney, and Judge Steven Morley, a member of the law school adjunct faculty who was appointed to the Philadelphia Immigration Court by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. The event takes place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Room 140.

On March 9, the Black Law Students Association will sponsor a discussion of Hip-Hop and the Law, featuring Professor Bret Asbury, Professor Donald Tibbs and Professor Kevin Woodson. The event takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 140.
