Health Law Concentration: Degree Requirements

Required Courses:

Electives - must complete at least six (6) credits from the approved list below:

Courses in the MLS Health Care Compliance Program (limited to six credits):

  • Health Care Rules and Regulations (LSTU 504S)
  • Health Care Quality, Patient Safety and Risk Management (LSTU 505S)
  • Patients and Privacy: HIPAA and Related Regulations (506S)

Courses in the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health, the College of Nursing, and the LeBow College of Business may be counted towards concentration credit with the permission of Professor Furrow and the course instructor. Some current courses include:

  • Injury Prevention and Control (PBHL 307)
  • Health and Human Rights (HMP 802)
  • Health Policy and Advocacy (PBHL 650ES)
  • Seminar in Firearms and Public Health (HMP 601)

Experiential Learning Opportunity (must complete one during second or third year):

  • Completion of a health law co-op placement OR
  • Completion of another comparable unpaid practical learning experience approved by the Concentration Director in writing
  • For JD/MPH students, completion of the MPH requirements

Writing Requirement

Concentrators must write a satisfactory paper on a health law topic, using any course, clinic, seminar or practicum (but not Co-op) placements. The page length should be around 20 pages, but may vary. Prior approval of the topic by the Program Director and course instructor is required.

Grade Requirement

A student must earn a grade of “C+” or better in each course counted toward completion of the requirements. Upon application to the Director and for good reason, one grade of less than “C+” may be accepted.

The concentration requires an overall 2.5 minimum GPA. To receive "Honors" in the concentration, the student must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better in the courses counted toward completion of the concentration.
