Ted Oswald, a 3L who served as an official election observer during Haiti’s recent presidential election, co-wrote an op-ed article that appeared in the Dec. 5 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Annul Haiti’s Elections and Have Free, Fair Vote,” provides a catalog of deficiencies in voting procedures during the Nov. 28 presidential election. Many voters were turned away from polling places, while many polls lacks ballot boxes and other materials, Oswald and attorney Regine Theodat report in the article.

Oswald has been based in Cite Soleil on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince throughout the fall semester, completing a co-op placement with the Lamp for Haiti Foundation through which he has earned credit for a variety of rich learning experiences.

His projects have included responding to cases of prison detainees, coordinating investigations on the conditions in camps for Haitians displaced by the January earthquake, publishing a 25-page Voter Education Guide, defending the foundation from a land-rights lawsuit filed against its health clinic and developing a plan for legal responses to the cholera epidemic.
