To complete the requirements for the Intellectual
Property Law Concentration, a student must complete a practical learning
experience related to IP lawyering. One option for satisfying
this requirement is to complete an approved Co-op placement.
Many of the Co-op opportunities offered by the law school's Co-op Program put students into the role of a transactional lawyer,
whether in participating in a trademark prosecution, working
with a start-up corporation to help it secure its patent rights
or assisting on a non-profit basis individual artists in protecting
their copyrighted works. These placements are with law firms,
corporations, non-profit organizations, local institutions
and governmental bodies. They span the range of practice settings
for lawyers interested in the unique challenges of practicing
IP law.
In collaboration with the Co-op Program, the Intellectual Property Law Program has developed a select group of co-op
placements specifically for students pursuing the concentration.
These placements range from working with the intellectual property
practice group at a leading national law firm based in Philadelphia,
to assisting a local pharmaceutical company with the management
of its IP assets, to a local non-profit which provides legal counseling
to entertainment talent pertaining to developing and protecting
their creations. These placements are designed for students entering
their third year of study who have completed the core courses in
the concentration’s curriculum. They often require a minimum
GPA or other qualification.
