Intellectual Property Law Program: Certificate Program

For students who wish to focus their studies in the area of intellectual property law, Drexel's Earle Mack School of Law offers a sequenced curriculum leading to completion of the concentration’s Certificate Program.

To complete the concentration’s requirements and to qualify for a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, a student must:

• Complete the following Required Courses (generally during the second year):

  • LAW 730 Copyright (3 credits)
• LAW 731 Trademarks and Unfair Competition (3 credits)
• LAW 732 Patents (3 credits)
• LAW 760 Business Organizations (5 credits)

• Complete a Practical Learning Experience (during the second or third year):

  • LAW 772 IP Practicum (5 credits); or
• Completion of a co-op placement approved by the Concentration Director (LAW 621) or
• Completion of another comparable unpaid practical learning experience approved by the Concentration Director in writing

• Complete Upper Class Electives:

  • At least 3 Electives from the Approved List (9 or more credits);

• The List of Approved Electives currently includes:

• LAW 772 IP Practicum (5 credits), if not used to satisfy the “Practical Learning” requirement above
• LAW 762 Antitrust (3 credits)
• LAW 623 Law and Economics (2-3 credits)
• LAW 735 Patent Prosecution (2-3 credits)
• LAW 736 Patent Litigation (2-3 credits)
• LAW 737 Advanced Patents (2-3 credits)
• LAW 740 Entertainment Law (3 credits)
• LAW 618 First Amendment (3 credits)
• LAW 704 Food and Drug Law (3 credits)

  • Additional Approved Electives we may offer are:

• International Intellectual Property
• Biotechnology and the Law
• Cyberspace and the Law
• Licensing Intellectual Property
• Other courses as approved by the Director
• Please Note: The Intellectual Property survey course will NOT be counted towards the fulfillment of
  IP Concentration requirements

  • Writing Requirement:

• Subject to the approval of the director of the IP concentration, each student must complete a “substantial” writing project on an IP subject or a closely related topic, requiring significant independent and original research. These projects may be completed as part of a course, a seminar, a law review note or an independent study at the Law School. However, a writing used to satisfy this requirement cannot also be used to satisfy any other requirement of the IP concentration.

The minimum number of course or seminar credits required for a student to get this concentration is 23. No credits can be double counted for the purposes of fulfilling the minimum credit, practical, and/or writing requirements, thus, for example, a seminar paper used to fulfill the writing requirement cannot then be utilized towards the course requirement.

Honors

• To receive "Honors," the student must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better in the courses counted toward completion of the concentration requirements.
