TIPS FOR THE ACCUSER IN A CONDUCT BOARD HEARING

This information was developed to help you prepare for your conduct board hearing. It is meant to supplement the Student Handbook, Chapter 8, Student Conduct Policy, which details the conduct process. You should read the section thoroughly as well as follow these tips when preparing for your case. Questions about the process should be referred to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards at (215) 895-6074.

Responsibilities of the Accuser

1. Review materials
2. Identify and prepare the witness(es)
3. Represent yourself, your organization or the University at the hearing

Suggested Process

1. Read witness and incident reports

2. Prepare a short outline which identifies key players. Identify which individuals will be needed to testify at the hearing.

  • a. Identify sequence of events
  • b. Identify special circumstances associated with the case (i.e., alcohol or other drug use, harassing or provoking speech or actions).
  • c. Be sure to have a clear understanding of the specific rule, regulation or standard of conduct the accused is being accused of violating as stated in the Student Handbook.

3. Prepare witness(es) or victim(s) for the hearing

  • a. Instruct witness(es) to tell the truth.
  • b. Clarify discrepancies in and between statements.
  • c. Anticipate questions the University Conduct Board and the accused may ask.
  • d. Identify questions you will want to ask of the accused and the witness(es).
  • e. Coach witness(es) about what to wear to the hearing and the conduct that will be expected.

The purpose of the hearing is to determine if it is “more likely than not” that a violation occurred. If a witness or victim recants his/her testimony prior to the hearing, you are to notify the University Conduct Officer immediately. The hearing may be canceled.
Upon request you will be provided an opportunity to view the file for the case. This file will also contain a list of witnesses the accused intends to call for the hearing. Please contact (215) 895-6074 to set up an appointment to view the file.
