Dr. Rakhmiel Peltz, Director of Judaic Studies and Professor of Sociolinguistics at Drexel University, will give a presentation on "Giving Yiddish Poetry A New Life: The Musical Genius of Chava Alberstein" at Swarthmore College on February 24, 2004. The event is sponsored by the Departments of English Literature and History of Swarthmore. Tuesday, February 24, 2004 4:15 pm to 6:15 pm Lang Performing Arts Center Cinema Swarthmore College 500 College Avenue Swarthmore, PA Poetry was the major genre of Yiddish literature in the twentieth century. The popular singer, songwriter, and composer, Chava Alberstein, collected the poems of the last major Yiddish writers in Israel and set them to riveting music. She also filmed her journey to capture these creative artists in their last years. Come to a presentation and discussion of her work that gives Yiddish poetry a new life. Professor Peltz will introduce the film, Too Early to be Quiet, Too Late to Sing, and discuss the lives and work of the poets. After the showing he will play songs Chava Alberstein created based on the poems she collected, from the CDs, Di Krenitse/The Well and Foreign Letters. Professor Nathalie Anderson of Swarthmore College will introduce the program. The event is free and open to the public.
