Exciting Project Soon to Start Called "Living Jewish History: An Intergenerational Conversation"   1/9/00
This special program, to take place in February and March of 2001, will bring together different sectors of the Jewish community to share in a living history project. Meeting over the course of two months will be Jewish seniors living in South Philadelphia, students from the Perelman Jewish Day School Stern Center, and students enrolled in a Drexel University course called Contemporary Jewish Life. The project, created by Dr. Rakhmiel Peltz, Director of Judaic Studies at Drexel with the help of the JCCs Stiffel Center in South Philadelphia, and the Perelman Jewish Day School Stern Center, is an attempt to promote communication between generations which is crucial for a creative Jewish life. Funding comes in large part from a grant from The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.

Seniors will visit the Perelman School, getting to know the younger Mitzvah Club students, discussing the history of the immigrant community as they remember it, and recalling how holidays were celebrated at home. Pupils will discuss their own family histories and holiday customs today. Later the Perelman students will visit the Stiffel Center, receiving a tour of the facility which was opened as a modern Talmud Torah in 1928. Members will show and discuss the place where they attended Hebrew School and where they brought their own children to day camp and teen dances. The seniors will perform a few musical numbers and the children will sing songs. Improvisational drama for both groups will be led by a professional.
