A Thousand Years of Jewish Life Through Yiddish Literature

An exploration of Jewish history, culture and religion through Yiddish literature. From the sayings grandma uses to the writings of Sholem Aleichem, Singer and Wiesel. An introductory survey of different forms of literature from oral and written sources, including diaries, prayers, folksongs, theater, film and contemporary fiction and poetry. The course will be conducted in English.

Jewish Life in the Middle Ages

An introductory survey of the history of the Jewish people, their civilization, religion, and contacts with other cultures in medieval times. Topics will include the rise of Christianity and Islam, the Talmud, Jewish mysticism, and the growth of Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewry.

Contemporary Jewish Life

The course will focus on the ethnographic study of the social and religious activities of Jews. From the work of anthropologists and sociologists, as well as from the student's own research, the class will attempt to understand the meaning that Jewish people derive from their beliefs, rituals and institutions.

Jewish Ethical Literature

This course will introduce the student to some of the texts on Jewish ethical instruction, including Sayings of the Fathers and The Path of the Just. Explorations of the texts will emphasize the interwoven themes of the individual's responsibilities to God, others, and self. Student projects will include comparative studies of ethical texts from different periods in Jewish history and interviews with community members.

An exciting introduction to contemporary society and culture in Israel, stressing ways of communicating in Hebrew. This is a special course for those students planning a co-op experience in Israel, as well as those interested in Judaic Studies and in getting an insider view of this diverse society.

Learn about the Jewish Bible and its influence on the lives of Jews. Emphasis will be placed on the biblical basis for the Jewish lifecycle and calendar.

Modern Jewish History

An exploration of the social, cultural, political and religious forces that have shaped Jewry the world over from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Topics will include emancipation and enlightenment, modern religious movements, socialism, Hebrew and Yiddish literature, the Holocaust, Zionism and the state of Israel.
