Using Internet Explorer in Mac OS to Download Software

If you have a Macintosh computer and still use Internet Explorer, you should be able to connect to the Software Download Server with it.  There are, however, some things you should consider:

    • You want to make sure that you're using the latest version of Internet Explorer.  That means 5.1.7 if you're using OS 9 and 5.2.3 if you're using OS X.  If you don't have the latest version and you're reading this page after January 31, 2006, you're pretty much out of luck.  See the next item for more details.
    • As of December 31, 2005, Microsoft (and, therefore, Drexel IRT) no longer provides support for Internet Explorer on the Mac platform.  Additionally, as of January 31, 2006, IE will no longer be available for download from Microsoft.  In their own words: "It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari."  Please see Microsoft's IE for Mac page for more information.
    • There is another "quirk" with downloading software via IE on the Mac.  See "Navigating & Downloading," below, for more information.

If you still decide to use Internet Explorer on your Mac to access the Software Server, when you go to https://software.drexel.edu, you'll be presented with a login screen like this:

Simply enter your Drexel domain username, password and put "drexel" into the "Domain" field, then click OK.  The password is usually the same password that you use to log in to DrexelOne or Webmail with, but it may be different.  Try that password first, but just once (trying too many times will get your account temporarily locked).  If you can't log in, try the following steps in order.

    1. Verify that you're using the correct password!  The quickest way to verify that you're using the correct password is to go to CAMS (the Computer Accounts Management Service) at http://accounts.drexel.edu (this link will open in a new window so you can refer back to this one).  When you get to the CAMS page, there's a drop-down menu below the "Password" field - click it and select "Drexel Domain", as shown:

Then, enter the username and password you use for DrexelOne or Webmail (or whatever you think the password is) and click "Sign in".  If you see a message that says "Your login was successful", then you're using the correct password and there's something else preventing you from logging into the Software Server.  Continue the steps below to determine what the problem is.  If you see a message that says "Your login user-id or password was not accepted", then the password you entered is not correct for your Drexel Domain account (though it may still be correct for DrexelOne or Webmail).  In that case, you can click "Help! I forgot my password" to use the Password Reset Wizard.  If you have problems using the Reset Wizard, you can contact the IRT Help Desk at (215)895-2698 for assistance.

    2. Clear the cache in Internet Explorer.  In Internet Explorer, click the Explorer menu, then click Preferences.  In the left-hand column, click on "Advanced" and click the "Empty Now" button.

    3. Reset the Certificate Settings.  Now, click on Security on the left, then click the "Reset to Defaults" button in the right-hand pane:

    4. Finally, click OK and then try to log in to the Software site again.  If you still have problems, please contact the IRT Help Desk at consult@drexel.edu or by phone at (215)895-2698.

    Navigating & Downloading

Once you're logged into the Software Download Server, navigating is as simple as pointing & clicking.  The screen will look something like this:

The links will usually show up as blue (unvisited) or purple (visited) underlined text, but may be different colors depending on what browser you're using and how it's configured.  Just like navigating any other website, you click the directory links once to open them.  In most browsers, you'd simply click the files that you want to download, but this doesn't work in IE for Mac.  You need to hold the "crtl" key while clicking on the file to display a "contextual" menu.  When that menu appears, click "Download Link to Disk":

This will open up a "Save" dialog box.  The default location to save to is the Desktop, but you can select a different location if you'd prefer.

Since most of the Mac software packages on the Software Server are stored as Disk Image (*.dmg) files, you need to wait for them to finish downloading, then double-click the Disk Image file on your desktop (or wherever it was downloaded) to "mount" the image.  After the image is mounted, a window should open displaying the contents of the image.  The installer file is usually clearly labeled or there will be installation instructions within the window.  If you're not sure what to do at this point, please contact the IRT Help Desk at consult@drexel.edu or by phone at (215)895-2698.
