NOTE: If you have formatted a machine and are reinstalling the operating system, you MUST install the patches available on CD before you connect to the network. If you don’t, your computer will be instantly compromised and you will need to format again.

Critical Updates – Manual

1. Open up Internet Explorer.
2. Click on Tools and go to Windows Update or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
3. Click on Scan for updates. If a box comes up asking you to trust Microsoft, then click Yes.
4. Click on Review and install updates.
5. Click Install Now to install the selected updates.
6. Click Accept to any windows that come up.
7. When they are finished, click OK to restart the computer.
8. After the machine reboots, repeat steps 1 through 6 until there are no more critical updates left.

Critical Updates – Automatic
Windows XP

1. Right-click on My Computer and go to Properties OR go to Control Panel and double-click on System.
2. In the System Properties window click on the Automatic Updates tab.
3. Put a check mark in the box next to Keep my computer up to date.
4. Set them to automatically download and install updates everyday.

Windows 2000

1. Go to Control Panel and double-click on Automatic Updates.
2. Put a check mark in the box next to Keep my computer up to date.
3. Set them to automatically download and install updates everyday.

Windows 98/ME

1. Run Windows updates manually.
2. Choose and install the update for the automatic updater.
3. After installation you will be able to configure the automatic updater to download and install updates everyday.

Symantec (Norton) Antivirus – Automatic Updates

1. Locate the yellow shield at the bottom right-hand side of your screen.
2. Double-click on the shield or right-click on the shield and go to Open Symantec Antivirus.
3. Click on File and go to Schedule.
4. Click on Schedule and change it to update Daily.
5. Click OK.
6. Click OK.

Symantec (Norton) Antivirus – LiveUpdate

1. Locate the yellow shield at the bottom right-hand side of your screen.
2. Double-click on the shield or right-click on the shield and go to Open Symantec Antivirus.
3. Click on LiveUpdate.
4. Click on Next to find all available updates.
5. Click on Next to install all available updates.
6. Click on Finish after updates are installed or if there were no updates.

Symantec (Norton) Antivirus – Manual Updates

1. Open a web browser and go to http://www.symantec.com.
2. Click on Download virus definitions.
3. Click on Download Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater Only).
4. Make sure that the language selected is English.
5. Select Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition from the list.
6. Click Download Updates.
7. Click on the link for the .exe file.
8. Click Save and save the file to your Desktop.
9. After the file is downloaded, close the browser and double-click on the .exe file.
10. Click Yes to update your virus definitions. (This will take some time so please be patient)
11. When it is complete, click OK.
12. Delete the .exe file that you downloaded from your Desktop.

Firewall – Windows XP

1. Open up your Network Connections by either:
   1. Right-clicking on My Network Places and going to Properties
   2. Click on Start and going to Settings then Network Connections.
2. Right-click on the network connection that you want to protect and go to Properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. In the Internet Connection Firewall area put a check in the box next to Protect my computer…
5. Click OK to save the settings.
