Microsoft Office Update: Office Update Prompts for Office CD

When you run Office Update, you may be prompted for your original installation disk or location.  This is because some of the updates need to access the original installation files.  If this happens, and the CD or folder that you installed from isn't available, you have two options:

    1. Change the Office Update Options to have it download larger update files which include any of the original files that may be required to install the update (click here for more specific info).
    2. Download Office 2003 from the Software Download Server, "unzip" the office2k3.exe file that you downloaded, and point Office Update at the "Office 2003" folder that it unzips to.

If you updated to Office 2003 from an older version of Office (such as Office 2000 or XP), Office Update may also prompt you for the installation CD for that version.  This is because, over the years, Microsoft has changed which applications were included in the "Professional" version of Office that we distribute.  For example, Office XP came with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, and FrontPage, while Office 2003 comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, and Publisher.  When you upgrade from Office XP to 2003, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access are updated to the 2003 version, but FrontPage is not updated.

What do you do in this situation?  If the application in question is something that you use regularly (let's say that you use FrontPage to update your department's website, for example), then you should go to the Software Download Server, download the current (2003) version of that application and install it.  If it's an application that you don't use, then you should uninstall the previous version of Office.  To do this, go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, click on the previous version of Office (for example "Microsoft Office XP with FrontPage") and then click Remove.  Follow the on-screen prompts to uninstall the previous version of Office.

If you have questions or problems using Office Update or with any of the information above, please contact the IRT Help Desk at (215)895-2698 or consult@drexel.edu.  Be sure to include as much detail as possible about the problem you're having so that our consultants can better assist you.
