Microsoft Office Update: Configuring Office Update Options

When installing some updates, Office Update may need to access the files that you originally used to install Office, whether you installed from a CD or the files that you downloaded from our Software Download Server (click here for info on the Software Download Server).  Basically, there are two different "versions" of each update:

    • A "small" one, which does not include any of the original Office installation files, so you may be prompted for the installation media
    • A "large" one, which includes the necessary original Office installation files, so you should not be prompted for the installation media

The trade-off here is time and space.  Obviously, the "large" one contains more files and will therefore take longer to download and install.  Usually there isn't a huge difference in the size of the file or the time involved, so it's a fairly minor consideration.

To configure Office Update to always use the "large" update and thereby not prompt you for the installation media, click the "Options" link on the Office Update page, as shown here:

When the Options page loads, select the second item ("Use larger update files...") and click the Save button:

After clicking Save, you should be back at the Office Update Page and can continue as usual.  There may be some occasions, even when using the larger update files, that you could be prompted for an Office CD.  If this occurs, please click here for more information on what to do in that situation.
If you have questions or problems using Office Update or with any of the information above, please contact the IRT Help Desk at (215)895-2698 or consult@drexel.edu.  Be sure to include as much detail as possible about the problem you're having so that our consultants can better assist you.
