ePortfolios at Drexel
Currently at Drexel, ePortfolio authors use the Folio application. This fall, all incoming freshmen will start their ePortfolio journey using the iWebFolio application. Extensive due diligence work was done across several months to find and then provide a more robust, feature-laden, user-friendly, and flexible product - now that ePortfolio use has gained more traction in more academic and administrative areas at Drexel. For example, the English Department plans to require all freshman English students to utilize an ePortfolio in their foundation classes. Incoming freshmen in subsequent academic years will be introduced to iWebFolio as well. Current Folio users will be able to continue using this application as long as they remain active students at Drexel.

ePortfolios – An Overview
According to the EDUCAUSE Center for Academic Research, or ECAR, ePortfolios are “a digitized collection of artifacts including demonstrations, resources, and accomplishments that represent an individual, group, or institution.” (Research Bulletin, Volume 2009, Issue 4, February 24, 2009.)
ePortfolios enable students, faculty, and staff to bring together their various work products that are related to their academic and/or professional endeavors. They can be constructed of any electronic media and provide rich evidence of their efforts and accomplishments. Authors can enable colleagues to view and/or comment on their various work products, at their election. One critical feature of all bona fide ePortfolios is author reflection on their work on an ongoing basis. Otherwise, what they assemble is merely a collection with no ongoing intrinsic value to them as content creators. The review and comment capabilities enable authors to receive feedback on their work from professors, colleagues, friends, prospective co-op and/or full-time employers.
Again, according to the ECAR article cited above, ePortfolios have myriad purposes and “most e-portfolios simultaneously serve several purposes:
- Academic Advising
- Institutional Accreditation and Departmental Review
- Curricular Development at the Program Level
- Career Planning and Development
- Alumni Development (or Lifelong Learning).
