Used Computer Disposal Procedure

Departments purchasing new computers for use by staff members have several options for disposing of the computers that are being replaced.

  • If the old computer is of value for use by another staff member in the department, it may be reassigned within the department.
  • If the old computer could be of value in another department at Drexel, it may be listed on the Surplus Exchange site.
  • If the old computer has no further use in the department but would be of use to a staff member at home, the department may give permission for the staff member to take the computer home.
  • If the old computer has no further use in the department and is not needed for home use, the department may donate the computer to a non-profit agency with which one or more of the department's staff is associated. The recipient agency should provide a thank you letter to the Office of Institutional Advancement for tax purposes.
  • Departments may contact TechServ at TechServ@drexel.edu to donate used computers to be refurbished and donated to non-profit organizations. Visit http://www.dusers.drexel.edu/techserv/donations/donating for details.
  • If the computer is clearly broken and has no further use to anyone, the department should dispose of it in accordance with established safety procedures. Departments should contact 215.895.1700 (Facilities Management) or email facilities@drexel.edu to make arrangements. There is a cost associated with disposal of broken computers and electronic components.
  • It is the responsibility of each department to insure all proprietary software is uninstalled and all data is completely deleted from the hard drives of any computer relinquished for donation or for disposal. Hard drives should be reformatted. Drexel IT (helpdesk@drexel.edu) can advise you of the best method of securely reformatting the drives.
