Policy for Selecting Students for Study Abroad

Study abroad at Drexel University is competitive. Students must have at least a 2.75 GPA at the time of applying in order to be considered for a program. The minimum GPA required for acceptance to particular programs, however, may be higher. Students must submit an application complete with approval from his/her department and the SCDC for students in a co-op program, letter of recommendation, and essay by the application deadline.

For faculty-led or similar departmental programs, the faculty/program director will select the students. For other Drexel Study Abroad programs, the Study Abroad office will review the applications.

Selection Policy

For Faculty-led programs, the individual faculty directors make acceptance decisions. As they will live and work with the students 24/7 once abroad, they are best equipped to select the students for their group. Some faculty directors heavily weigh GPA and academic year. Some interview everyone and some do not. Questions about acceptance criteria should be directed to the faculty director.

For other Drexel Study Abroad programs, the Study Abroad office will review applications. When the number of eligible students exceeds the number of placements available, a selection committee composed of members of the Council of International Programs will evaluate the applications. They will weigh:

  1. GPA;
  2. Recommendations;
  3. Academic programs; and
  4. Judicial records
  5. Depending on the site and program, students may be evaluated on language ability, past course work, and major/minor requirements

Some students may be asked to consider going a different term or choosing a different site which meets their scholastic needs. Eligible students may also be put on a waiting list for specific programs. Some applications may be declined.
