The Philadelphia Orchestra celebrated the opening of the historic 2012 pilot residency and tour of China at The National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing. partnership with The Philadelphia Orchestra on the historical 2012 Orchestra Residency Week and Tour in the People’s Republic of China.
International audiences honored not only the opening of the tour, but also the unveiling of two significant photo exhibitions documenting the history of the relationship between the United States and the People's Republic of China. Former U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Platt, who facilitated the 1973 Orchestra tour of China with President Nixon, spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the exhibitions and recalled the Orchestra's legacy of cultural diplomacy. The world-class music of these talented local artists continues to extend beyond the concert halls though "pop-up concerts" at important cultural sites such as the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace.
As the educational sponsor of the Orchestra’s residency program, Drexel University is bringing the Drexel Dragon spirit of experiential global engagement to the people of China through student and community outreach in the arts, science, technology and business. During the course of the 10-day Orchestra tour, Drexel is pleased to collaborate with partners such as the Pennsylvania Center in Shanghai to share the past, present and future of a university committed to educating an international population and seeking solutions to the world’s greatest challenges.
At one of the morning rehearsals, Drexel welcomed over 60 guests who not only had the opportunity to hear the world renowned orchestra musicians preparing for their opening concert at the NCPA, but also to meet with a Drexel community of faculty, staff, alumni and current students in participatory break out sessions and informal exhibition tours. Guests included incoming freshman, families of current students, and prospective students for 2013.
