Kara Spiller, a Ph.D. student in the School of Biomedical Engineering under the advisement of Dr. Tony Lowman in Chemical and Biological Engineering is headed to Shanghai Jiao Tong. Her project includes designing a biomaterial to replace damaged articular cartilage in the knee. The semi-degradable hydrogel has appropriate mechanical and fluid transport properties to support cell viability, and it also has the capability to allow controlled release of growth factors that can stimulate further tissue generation. This fall, she will complete the capstone project of her dissertation in the Shanghai Key Tissue Engineering Laboratory, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, under the advisement of Drs. Yilin Cao and Wei Liu. The project, entitled "Engineering Smart Biomaterials for Cartilage Tissue Engineering: A Drexel University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Training Partnership," will be funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Enhancement Program.
