When women and girls gain access to rights, resources, education, and representation this empowers us all, but are we really there yet? The global importance of gender equality is underscored by its inclusion as one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Gender equality and empowering of women is acknowledged as being a key to achieving the other seven goals. Where do we stand today ? How far have we come and what still remains to be achieved.
We can take a look at the status and rights of women from different perspectives, societies, and political and cultural traditions.
For example, a new law is being considered in India which would require reserving 33% the seats in Parliament for women; similar legislation has been passed or is being considered in many countries in Europe. These laws are causing wide-ranging debate. Is such legislation critical to women's empowerment?
