The College of Arts and Sciences, Africana Studies and Latinos for a United Campus in association with the National Boricua Human Rights Network present Ricardo Jimanez, former political prisoner and human rights activist.
Jiménez was accused of belonging to a radical underground independence group and was arrested in 1980 for seditious conspiracy and related charges and received a sentence of 98 years. While in prison, Jimanez taught math and basic literacy to illiterate prisoners as well as providing tutoring for the GED exam and English as a second language. In the face of the HIV/AIDS, he worked to develop educational programs for other prisoners about the disease. He was granted a pardon in 1999 by President Clinton and has since continued his human rights activism and outreach about HIV/AIDS.
