Job Description

Position Title : Director of Alumni Relations
Reports to : Associate Vice President, Office of Alumni Relations
Job Classification : Professional/Administrative

Basic Function:

The Director of Alumni Relations manages the strategic development, implementation and execution of new and existing alumni and student events, programs and services designed to foster a lifelong connection between alumni and the university. The Director manages the strategic and logistical management of volunteer programs and services designed to engage and cultivate a national and international network of alumni volunteers. The Director manages collaborative efforts to partner with various university departments to develop programs, events and volunteer activities that promote alumni leadership and advocacy, and support university programming, fundraising, outreach and student recruitment goals.

Detail:

  1. Exercise management responsibility for the strategic and logistical management of alumni and student events, programs and services that strengthen the alumni-to-university, alumni-to-alumni, and alumni-to-student networks.
    • Direct the development of annual programming plans in accordance with Alumni Relations, Institutional Advancement, and university objectives.
    • Introduce and manage the implementation of new and expanded programming.
    • Direct and oversee overall program conceptualization and planning, budget development and administration, and execution of all logistical requirements and marketing initiatives.
    • Introduce and manage the implementation of strategies to increase student involvement with alumni and leadership programs, and to build relationships with campus departments and student organizations to identify, promote and execute new and existing programs.
  2. Exercise management responsibility for the strategic and logistical management of alumni volunteer services to maximize the quality and quantity of volunteer related opportunities for alumni.
    • Directs the development of annual programming plans in accordance with Alumni Relations, Institutional Advancement and university objectives.
    • Introduce and manage the implementation of new and expanded programming to provide relevant volunteer activities and services; manage execution of all logistical programming requirements and marketing initiatives.
    • Manage strategies for the cultivation of a national and international network of alumni volunteers; identification and recruitment of new volunteers; and placement of volunteers in appropriate opportunities.
    • Manage the implementation of strategies to develop relationships with campus departments to identify, promote and execute new and existing volunteer opportunities across the university.
  3. Exercise management responsibility for cultivation strategies for constituent groups.
    • Manage partnerships with university departments and alumni volunteers to identify desired programming goals and associated alumni events or services.
    • Directs the delivery of collaborative alumni events and programs.
    • Expand and manage partnerships to maximize campus representation and inclusion.
  4. Supervise all programming staff.
    • Oversee the conceptual planning, logistical implementation and execution of all related events, programs and services.
    • Manage the development of individual performance goals and associated action plans.
    • Determine project assignments and monitor progress.
    • Create systems and procedures to enhance and streamline the event planning and execution processes.
    • Regularly monitor and measure team performance.
  5. Serve as a liaison to one or more Alumni Association Board of Governors committees.
    • Coordinate committee meetings, agendas and distribution of the minutes.
    • Contribute to the development of the committee’s annual action plan.
    • Execute committee assignments.
  6. Participate on related university and Institutional Advancement committees as assigned.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

 Qualifications :

  1. Five to seven years of experience in program development, event management, and/or volunteer management.
  2. Bachelor’s degree required. Course work in subjects relevant to marketing and communications desirable.
  3. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously required.
  4. Ability to work collaboratively with various constituent groups, volunteers, and campus partners required.
  5. Ability and willingness to travel on a frequent basis required.
  6. Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends required.
  7. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills required.
  8. Supervisory skills preferred.
  9. Excellent administrative skills required.
  10. Strong presentation skills and/or demonstrated training experience desirable.

Qualities and Characteristics:

Demonstrates -   integrity, confidence, enthusiasm, initiative, analytical ability, understanding of volunteer relations, the capacity to inspire cooperation, understanding of the vital importance of applied and experiential higher education, a sense of humor and understanding of the breadth and complexity of a major research university.

Proven skills – leadership skills, listening skills, and team player.

Supervision and Evaluation :
The Director of Alumni Relations, reports to the Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations.  Performance evaluations will be prepared by the Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations.
