Position Title: Director of Development, College of Engineering

Reports to: Associate Vice President of Major Gifts, Office of Institutional Advancement

Job Classification: Professional/Administrative

Basic Function:

The Director of Development, College of Engineering is responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive development program for the College.  The program incorporates both capital and annual fund raising, with emphasis on major individual and planned gifts in the current Dream It. Do It. Drexel campaign environment.  He or she will also engage in corporate and foundation fund raising in coordination with the Corporate and Foundation Relations Department in Institutional Advancement.  He or she reports to Associate Vice President of Major Gifts and has a secondary reporting relationship to the Dean of the College of Engineering.  The Director of Development will also work closely with the Senior Vice President of Institutional Advancement and other senior management.

Detail:

  1. Plans, organizes and directs programs to secure major gifts by pursuing the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship of private support from individuals, corporations, and foundations to the College of Engineering.
  2. Serves as the major gift fund raiser for the College of Engineering, as such, builds and manages a pool of 125 or more prospects capable of making commitments of up to $100,000 or more.  Develops detailed strategies and goals on a monthly basis for the top 30 prospects.
  3. Maintains an active schedule of face-to-face meetings with major gift suspects and prospects, averaging fifteen (15) or more such meetings per month.
  4. Serves as advisor to the Dean of the College of Engineering on fund-raising matters and coordinates development activities involving the College and the Office of Institutional Advancement including the Office of Alumni Relations, being cognizant of Institutional Advancement and the College of Engineering needs and procedures.
  5. Assists the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts, Associate Vice President of Corporate and Foundation Relations, Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and Dean of the College of Engineering in the analysis, formation, and implementation of fund-raising plans, policies and procedures as they pertain to the College’s development program.
  6. Assists in the qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of Principal Gifts prospects and donors ($1,000,000 or more) for the School in association with the Associate Vice President & Chief Philanthropic Officer.
  7. Coordinates and supports the College of Engineering’s corporate and foundation gift program in cooperation with the Associate Vice President of Corporate and Foundation Relations and the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
  8. Develops and implements the College of Engineering’s estate gift program in cooperation with the Assistant Vice President of Gift Planning.
  9. Manages the College of Engineering’s Dream It. Do it. Drexel Campaign Committee in association with the Campaign Executive.
  10. Develops a group of key volunteers through the ongoing management and enhancement of the College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board.
  11. Stewards donors through ongoing communications, recognition activities, invitations to key events, and interaction with beneficiaries of their support.  Coordinates such activities with the central Donor Relations function as needed.
  12. Oversees College of Engineering development publications and communication materials, and consults on other College of Engineering communication vehicles as appropriate.
  13. Promotes University priorities and image to constituents.  Serve as front line staff to promote campus goals and objectives.  Maintain current knowledge of university-wide institutional priorities.  As appropriate, and in consultation with senior staff, cultivate and solicit prospects on behalf of other campus units.
  14. Adheres to performance goals and standards for Directors of Development as specified under Office of Institutional Advancement guidelines.  Any changes during employment to these guidelines will be disseminated in a timely manner.
  15. Follows Institutional Advancement procedures with regard to prospect management and documenting contacts. Responsible for oversight and submission of all relative fund raising reports, statistics, projections and publications.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Five or more years’ experience of demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising in a higher education development program is required
  2. Bachelor’s degree required; with a degree in engineering, science or technology preferred; and an advanced degree is a plus.
  3. Proven track record of cultivating, soliciting and closing gifts of $50,000+ required.
  4. Ability and willingness to travel required.
  5. Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends required
  6. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills required.
  7. Excellent administrative skills required.
  8. Previous experience working with senior-level executives preferred.
  9. Knowledge of prospect management systems preferred.
  10. Knowledge of database fundraising software CS Advance is desirable.
  11. Web fundraising experience is desirable.

Supervision and Evaluation:
The Director of Development, College of Engineering reports to the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts and has a secondary reporting relationship to the Dean of the College of Engineering.  Performance evaluations will be prepared by the Associate Vice President in consultation with the Dean.  The Director of Development will also work closely with the Senior Vice President of Institutional Advancement and other senior management.
