Marti Lieberman '12: The Drexel Grad Behind Philly's Only Mac 'n Cheese Food Truck

Some like it homemade, and some like it from a box. Some like it elbow-shaped, and some like it with those funny cartoon characters. Some opt for it as their entire entrée while others prefer it as a side dish. However you like it, one thing that most of us all have in common is our absolute love for this classic comfort food: macaroni and cheese. Drexel graduate Marti Lieberman ’12 grabbed this culinary craze by the horns and ran with it. She is now the CEO of Philadelphia’s first and only mac ’n cheese food truck: the Mac Mart Truck.

Lieberman hasn't always been a mac ‘n cheese aficionado, and didn’t even major in hospitality management at Drexel. She came to the City of Brotherly Love in order to pursue her dreams of working in the fashion industry, as a publicist or personal stylist. >>

Turkey Project
Volunteers distribute frozen turkeys at one of the first-ever Turkey Projects. This community outreach program of the Alumni Association continues to grow, and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year!

Celebrate Tradition and Spread Holiday Cheer with the 40th Anniversary Alumni Holiday Turkey Project

The Alumni Holiday Turkey Project was established four decades ago, by a group of Drexel graduates known at the time as the Alumnae Planning Board. The purpose of the Project was, and still is, to collect donations and purchase and distribute frozen turkeys to families in-need in West Philadelphia. In its early years, the Project distributed about 300 turkeys to families in the community. Over the years, the Project has continued to grow and we are proud to share that in 2012 we distributed 1,000 turkeys — more than tripling the number of families impacted by the Turkey Project since its start.

This is a big year for the Turkey Project — the Alumni Association's longest running community service program — as we celebrate its 40th anniversary on December 20, 2013. We hope you'll join us in honoring this holiday tradition by making a gift to support the Project and helping our West Philadelphia neighbors as well as those served by Drexel's 11th Street Family Health Services Center. This year we've set our highest donation goal yet, hoping to raise $20,000 from generous alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. And since it's the 40th anniversary, how about giving a gift of $40 or more? The first 40 people to do so will receive a Drexel alumni T-shirt as our way of saying thanks!

You can also volunteer to join us at the Paul Peck Alumni Center on December 20 to help distribute the turkeys and see first-hand the impact the Project has on the community. We hope to see you there! >>

CAN DUSupport Our West Philadelphia Neighbors at the CAN DU Fall Clean-up Project

The Community Alumni Network at Drexel University (CAN DU) will host a community service project on October 26 at the Lee Cultural Center, which is an important community resource within the University's West Philadelphia neighborhood.

Drexel alumni, students and friends are invited to spend the morning helping clean up this community playground and recreation facility, which sits on 9.4 acres behind Drexel's Vidas Athletic Complex and is home to sports fields, day camps, after school programs and other neighborhood programs. Our CAN DU volunteers will help beautify the Lee Cultural Center by refreshing some of the exterior features with a fresh coat of paint, and through the clean-up and removal of trash and debris from the play areas. >>

Costume CollectionDrexel’s Historic Costume Collection Opens to the Public for the First Time

A treasure trove of textiles and garments spanning more than 200 years, once one of Drexel University’s best kept secrets, is opening to the public for the first time. The Drexel Historic Costume Collection, which was previously open to the public by appointment only and primarily for research purposes, is now launching quarterly, full-day “Fashion Fridays.” The events will each include an educational seminar on a particular aspect of fashion history and a customized viewing of the collection.

Housed in Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, the museum-quality collection of more than 12,000 garments and accessories dates back centuries, with holdings including garments worn by actress Greta Garbo, American socialite and style icon Babe Paley and Princess Grace of Monaco. >>
