Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Connections Grants (P)
Deadline: May 22, 2012 (concept papers)
Funding: Up to $170,000
Purpose: Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity establishes a research base for policy and environmental factors that influence healthy eating and body weight in children, as well as effective policy/environmental strategies to reverse childhood obesity epidemic.
Eligibility: Must have completed a doctorate or terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., J.D.) within 10 years of the start date of the grant. Propose a project that spans 12 to 18 months in duration, and devote at least 25 percent of their time to the project.

Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research
Deadline: May 31, 2012 (LOI)
Funding: Up to $250,000
Purpose: The Edmond J. Safra Core Programs for Parkinson’s research supports translation of scientific discoveries into therapeutic interventions in order to benefit people with PD.
Eligibility: Applicants must submit a one-page Target Profile as part of the pre-proposal submission process. This form allows applicants to provide specific details of proposal strategy.

Lupus Research Institute
Deadline: May 31, 2012
Funding: Up to $300,000 for 3 years
Purpose: To support novel research projects relevant to basic, translational or clinical investigation in lupus. Research applications will be judged principally on novelty of the hypotheses, scientific quality, strength of approach, relevance to lupus, and likelihood of success.
Eligibility: Both established and new investigators may apply. Applicants should hold advanced degrees and be affiliated with institutions of higher learning in the United States.

Social Science Research Council
Deadline: May 31, 2012
Funding: Up to $75,000
Purpose: Our Shared Past Grants Program promotes the development of international scholarly communities committed to analyzing history curriculum and reframing the teaching of world history through the development of new curricular content that illustrate shared cultural, economic, military, religious, social, and scientific networks and practices.
Eligibility: Grants will be made to research teams or research centers on U.S. university campuses. Priority consideration will be given to applicants with a demonstrated ability to reform curriculum design and identify partner organizations/individuals that can help to put scholarly content or specific recommendations in the hands of educators and policymakers who can influence curriculum reform at national and local levels.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE RESEARCH

Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation
Deadline: June 26, 2012 (LOI); upon invitation, proposals are due July 10.
Funding: Up to $300,000; average grants are $150,000
Purpose: To fund drug discovery research programs from domestic and international investigators in academia and biotechnology companies. In addition, ADDF initiates, sponsors, and co-sponsors conferences to stimulate new ideas and approaches in areas of interest to the Foundation.
Eligibility: Applicants must submit an LOI two weeks prior to the application date (July 10).

National Brain Tumor Society

Funding: $300,000 ($150,000 per year for 2 years.)  (No Indirect Costs)
Purpose: The Innovation Research Grant supports transformative or catalytic scientific research projects that will significantly move the field forward toward effective brain tumor therapies. Will fund projects that highlight innovative research strategies and will support the development of novel brain tumor therapies for adult and/or pediatric brain tumor patients.

Children’s Cancer Research Fund
Deadline: June 17, 2012
Funding: $40,000
Purpose: The purpose of this grant program is to support investigators at the postdoctoral level (M.D. or Ph.D.) in the conduct of innovative pilot clinical studies that have the potential to develop new insights into clinical aspects of childhood cancer.
Eligibility: The principal investigator should be at a postdoctoral level (M.D. or Ph.D.). Senior fellows or junior faculty who are with or without limited funds, but show a potential to compete for federal grants, will be given priority. Applications from well-funded senior investigators will not be considered.

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation

Funding: Up to $1,500,000 (including direct and indirect costs)
Purpose: To identify and understand the impact of various epigenetic modifications of DNA and histones in the initiation, progression, and treatment of myeloma utilizing state of the art technologies.
Eligibility: Must be a collaborative, multi-institutional program (at least 2 separate research institutions) consisting of a maximum of 3 major research aims that will lead to a better understanding of the role of epigenetics in myeloma disease biology and treatment.

The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc.

Funding: Unspecified; average grant size is $50,000
Purpose: The Special Grant Program in Chemical Sciences supports projects that increase public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the chemical sciences; innovative approaches to chemistry education (K-12, undergraduate, and graduate); and efforts to make chemistry careers more attractive.

The Smith Richardson Foundation

Purpose: To support tenure-track junior faculty engaged in the research and writing of a scholarly book on an issue regarding American foreign policy, international relations, international security, military policy, and diplomatic and military history.
Eligibility: Applicants must have a Ph.D., preferably in Political Science, Public Policy, Policy Analysis, International Political Economy, or History. They also must hold a position as a full-time tenure-track faculty member of a college or university in the United States.

Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant

Funding: Up to $50,000
Purpose: To support individual writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through grants in the following categories: articles, blogs, books, new and alternative media, and short-form writing.
Eligibility: Applicants must be a published writer, and must be an art historian, artist, critic, curator, journalist, or practitioner in an outside field who is strongly engaged with the contemporary visual arts.

CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics, Inc.

Funding: Up to $100,000 for up to 3 years
Purpose: To support projects designed to answer questions about the pathophysiology of CF or its management, or pilot programs aimed at determining the best strategies and methods for approaching questions that require assessment through larger-scale research and/or multi-center, collaborative trials.

American Diabetes Association Clinical/Translational Awards
Deadline: July 15, 2012
Funding: Up to $200,000 for 3 years
Purpose: To support patient-oriented research in diabetes. Clinical research is defined as A) research directly involving humans, and includes educational, psychosocial, behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research as well as studies of normal physiology and mechanisms of disease, B) and epidemiological research or other clinically based research.
Eligibility: One person must be specified as the PI. The ADA does not permit Co-Principal Investigators.Award recipients are required to become members of and/or maintain membership in the Professional Section of the American Diabetes Association.

Purpose: To shed light on the role education plays in reducing economic and social inequalities and to find ways to realize education's potential to promote more equal opportunity.

Alliance for Lupus Research

Purpose: The Target Identification in Lupus Grants support research that will accelerate the development of new treatments for lupus. Studies in genetics, immunology, cell biology and molecular biology to identify and characterize molecular systems must be oriented towards the development of drugs that would prevent and/or ameliorate clinical signs and symptoms of lupus.

Purpose: To support research related to the Marfan syndrome and related connective tissue disorders.  The goal of this program is to advance research in this area and to identify methods for earlier diagnosis, improved therapies and to find an eventual cure.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

William T. Grant Foundation Scholars Program
Deadline: July 3, 2012
Funding: $350,000 over 5 years
Purpose: To support promising early-career researchers from diverse disciplines, who have demonstrated success in conducting high-quality research and are seeking to further develop and broaden their expertise. Current research interests include how the everyday settings can be improved for youth ages 8 to 25, and how research evidence is used in policy and practice that affect youth.
Eligibility: Projects must address issues that have relevance for theory, and policies or practices, affecting the settings of youth ages 8 to 25 in the United States or a vulnerable subpopulation of those youth. Applicants must have received their terminal degree within seven years of submitting their application.
