Sports Fans of the '50s

Every other year, the Sports Fans of the '50s gather together to celebrate and kick-off Sports Fans Weekend with a Rally and Reception on the Friday night of Alumni Weekend.

In 2008, the group reunited in the Field House at the Buckley and Vidas Fields, home to all of Drexel's outdoor sports. The newly-renovated Buckley and Vidas Fields are named for our generous three-letter Hall of Fame donors, Bob Buckley '58 and Vince Vidas '59. The evening featured a classic, old-fashioned barbeque, beverages, dancing and music. There was lots of reminiscing about our Drexel days on and off the field with our fellow athletes, fans, friends, cheerleaders and Mario the Magnificent, our Drexel Mascot!

The capstone of the biennial reunion is a luncheon held on the Saturday of Alumni Weekend. In 2008, the luncheon was held in the beautiful Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center in its 3rd Floor Atrium. The group presented the John and Mary Semanik Scholarships to the male and female athletes of the year and acknowledged and recognized members of the undefeated 1955 Football Team. Sports Fans of the '50s Recognition Brick
and Student Scholarship

This dynamic group will soon be cementing its history permanently by dedicating a Sports Fans of the '50s Recognition Brick and contributing funds to the Drexel Field Capital Campaign.

This special dedication will take place in the early fall 2008 and will allow our Sports Fans group to preserve a special connection with Drexel Athletics forever with an engraved brick on the walkway at the Drexel Athletic Complex. The recognition brick will be engraved with "Sports Fans of the '50s" and will serve as a lasting memorial for this unique group and memorable era, and will recognize a special time in Drexel Athletics history!

Additionally, we will be collecting donations to start up a Sports Fans of the '50s Student Scholarship Fund. Please check back soon for more details on how you can contribute towards the scholarship fund and pass on your passion for Drexel sports to future student athletes.
