John McCool ’82 is Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cisco’s Data Center, Switching and Services Group (DSSG). In this role he is responsible for managing the strategy, engineering, and marketing direction of Cisco’s comprehensive family of enterprise Ethernet switching solutions, including the Cisco Catalyst series for the campus and the Cisco Nexus and MDS switching series for the data center. He is also in charge of the optical product line and of Cisco’s expansion into application networking, virtualization, and integrated security services. All of these technology areas have been foundational in his leadership of Cisco’s virtualization and Data Center 3.0 strategies.

Among his other leadership roles in Cisco, McCool is a member of the Enterprise Business Council, the Quality Experience Council, and a cochair of Cisco EcoBoard and the Enterprise Architecture Board. At the Enterprise Architecture Board, McCool oversees Cisco’s initiatives to promote system solutions for the campus, branch, and data center.

Prior to his current role at Cisco, McCool led the Campus Switching Systems Technology Group, which
encompassed the Cisco Catalyst 4000 and 6000 Series as well as optical transceivers. McCool came to Cisco through the acquisition of Granite, where he was instrumental in growing Cisco’s Gigabit Ethernet technologies and the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series to multibillion-dollar run rates. Over the years he expanded his responsibilities to lead the Internet Switching Business Unit responsible for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series, Cisco’s most successful and innovative LAN switching platform.

Prior to joining Cisco, McCool led network product development teams at SynOptics, NeXT Computer, and Advanced Micro Devices. He has been active in creating industry standards, playing a key role in the
development of dual speed 10/100BASE-T technology as part of the IEEE802.3u standard and making significant contributions to the ANSI X3T9.5 FDDI standard. He holds several patents related to network technologies.

McCool holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University and a master’s degree in computer engineering from Santa Clara University.
