2008 Summer Internship WorkReady Program

The Human Resources Department and the Office of Government and Community Relations are once again partnering with Workready Philadelphia and other institutional employers in the city who are currently working together with Workready Philadelphia in making a difference for our Youth. This is a great opportunity to further promote the positive image of Drexel University in the community as well as provide potential college bound youth a positive experience with our University. The goal this year is 2,000 internships. Be part of the solution! Give Youth Their First Break! Secure your Summer Internship Commitment for 2008.

The program dates are June 30th - August 8th.  Give Youth an opportunity to get a head start in the working world. Hire a youth for 20 hours a week for 6 weeks Mondays - Thursdays. Youth ages ranges from 16 - 21 yrs. and they are required to have a resume and prior work experience.  Youth bring with them various clerical skills such as customer service, telephone, data entry and computer skills using Microsoft office suite. Youth are prescreened by the program and departments get to interview and select interns. The cost to the department would be $1,591 if you pay the youth $8.00/hr. The Employer Wage Chart details the cost of sponsoring an intern. Payroll Processing: Interns will be paid on Philadelphia Youth Network’s (PYN) Payroll. PYN will then invoice the Drexel University Accounts Payable department for payroll processing of the interns.

Workready Philadelphia offers high-quality work experiences for more than 8,000 youth each year through a variety of programs. However, thousands more youth who are eager to work must be turned away each year because positions are not available.

Who gave you your first break? Most of us can point to mentors, first jobs or family supports that have helped shape our professional success. For many youth in Philadelphia, the lack of social connections and work opportunities are barriers to getting that first line on a resume which is so essential to the next step in building a career.  Through Work Ready, we can offer the kinds of opportunities that many teenagers in our City lack. At the same time, we will be helping ourselves by enhancing our image in the community, building our future workforce and, ultimately, benefiting our bottom line.

Please secure your Summer Internship Commitment for 2008.
