Manager's Checklist for New Employees
Congratulations on your new employee!
This checklist is designed to assist you with the various steps that need to be completed to make your new employee feel welcome and successful. Please contact your recruitment consultant should you have any questions or concerns.
In preparation for their FIRST DAY
We encourage you to prepare the following:
1. Office/desk and computer:
a. Contact University Procurement for office furniture
b. Contact Facilities Management to request office space
c. Contact IRT to purchase a computer or to have an existing computer reconfigured
2. Phone:
a. Contact Telecommunications department to order a new phone or have an existing on reconfigured, http://www.drexel.edu/IRT/services/telecom/
b. Also check to make sure that their new voicemail box has been setup
3. Supplies:
a. Plan ahead to ensure that your new employee has all the required office supplies on their first day, including pens, paper, post-it, message pads, office keys, etc.
b. Please contact Printing and Mailing at 215-895-2797 to order business cards
On their FIRST DAY
Your new employee will arrive in your department at 8:00am. Please take time to introduce them to co-workers and allow them get settled in their new location.
Please walk them over to attend the Welcome Aboard program which begins at 9:00am and runs until 3:00pm every Monday (Tuesday in case of a holiday).

As a leader in your department, take the time to perform your own department orientation for your new employee which will include, but is not limited to:
- Discuss office operations and initial expectations
- Division Information
- Department Information
- Position Information
- Performance Information
- Employee Handbook
- Tour of your building and facilities
- Office/conference room
- Office supplies/copy/fax machine
- Washrooms/vending machines
- Coffee/Lunch options
- Emergency Exit/First Aid
- Office keys (if necessary)
Within their FIRST TWO WEEKS
As part of Welcome Aboard, your new employee participated in an activity which familiarized them with the FIRST Principles . This activity uses the same format as the FIRST Principles section on the Performance Appraisal . In order to ensure their success in your department, it is your responsibility to follow up on this activity by having a discussion with your new employee on what the FIRST Principles look like in you department.
