Drexel University Pennoni Honors College Fall 2009 Schedule of Events
Attention Students: A good number of spots remain for the Campus Concert on Tuesday, 11/17/09, and The Philadelphia Orchestra DrexelCast on Saturday, 11/21/09.
No deposit is required, and this event counts for Honors Events Credit. Students wishing to receive Honors Events Credit must sign up in the PHC Main Office

All ticketed events are first-come, first-served. Tickets are available to Honors students only—unless otherwise advertised—and will be distributed approximately one week prior to each event. Students must sign up at the front desk of the Pennoni Honors College Main Office (5016 MacAlister Hall), and leave a $20 cash refundable deposit for each Honors student on the list (unless otherwise noted below). Each student may sign up for no more than her/himself and one additional Honors student. If in doubt about availability, call or stop by the Honors Office. Also, be sure to regularly check your Drexel University e-mail for additional programs and events.
Unless an emergency occurs, refunds will not be given for student cancellations fewer than three (3) business days prior to the event. Tickets must be picked up at least three (3) business days prior to the event; otherwise, the ticket and deposit will be forfeited. The refundable deposit will be available for pick-up starting on the business day following the performance. Make sure to bring your ticket stub, program booklet, or other proof of attendance when picking up your deposit.

The beautiful, young geisha Cio-Cio San has renounced her family and surrendered all of her love and faith to her new American husband, Lieutenant Pinkerton. Intoxicated by her innocence, he pledges his love for her ecstatically, only to leave her behind when he returns to America. After waiting patiently for his return, she is met with unbearable heartbreak and, ultimately, the choice between life and honor. Perhaps the most popular work in the entire operatic canon—thanks to its swelling, unabashed melodies and a story that touches the depths of the human soul—Madama Butterfly comes to life on the Academy stage. A stunning and acclaimed production by designer Jun Kaneko marries the classic with the contemporary to the tune of Giacomo Puccini’s breathtaking compositions (sung in Italian with English translations).

Join the Pennoni Honors College for a trip to The Barnes Foundation, home of the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside of the Louvre. One of the Philadelphia region’s hidden treasures, The Barnes collection will amaze and delight you. All attendees will meet at a bus on the 33rd St. side of the Drexel University Bookstore by 11:30 a.m. for a scheduled arrival to The Barnes at 12 p.m. The bus will return to campus by 2 p.m.

Join the Pennsylvania Ballet for a medley of three exciting works, fresh for the fall season! In Theme and Variations, Balanchine pays homage to the Imperial Russian Ballet of his youth in one of his most technically demanding works. This plotless production features glittering costumes and inventive choreography credited with bringing classical ballet into the 20th century. In World Premiere, Choreographer-in-Residence Matthew Neenan creates his twelfth new work especially for the Pennsylvania Ballet in his own unique contemporary style. Finally, the allure of the cowboy is the focus of de Mille’s Rodeo, which captures the pioneering spirit of the American character and the exuberance of youth. A defining achievement in de Mille’s early choreographic career, Rodeo is an optimistic tale of a tomboy’s attempt to lasso in love, with Copland’s exuberant score setting the scene.

Come to the Honors Halloween Bash! right here on campus, featuring great food and a thrilling discussion about the allure of horror films! Karin Kelly, a horror genre enthusiast and Associate Professor of Cinema & Television in Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, will present. Following dinner, shuttle buses then will lead partygoers to Terror Behind the Walls, a massive haunted house located in Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary—the country’s most historic prison. A frightful time promises to be had by one and all!
PLEASE NOTE: Students signing up for this event must attend both the dinner/presentation and the trip to Eastern State Penitentiary immediately following. During the dinner, all students will be required to complete a waiver to enter and participate in Terror Behind the Walls.

Take an eye-opening journey through the inner workings of the human body in this follow-up to 2005's extremely popular Body Worlds exhibition! Experience the human body in all its elegance and complexity in the exhibition of entire bodies in dramatic poses. This exhibition presents a broad collection of authentic human specimens and, for the first time in Philadelphia, a special presentation on the brain. Featuring some of the latest findings in neuroscience on brain development, function, and disease, this exhibit will inspire a greater understanding of—and respect for—the mysterious world of the brain. Body Worlds is the only public anatomical exhibition associated with an established body-donation program.
