Who should choose General Studies?
Students who desire an individually tailored, self-directed degree to suit their diverse interests appreciate the flexibility of Goodwin College’s General Studies program. Students with an associate’s degree or other previous college coursework will appreciate this program’s acceptance of transfer credits. Students receive excellent preparation, applicable to almost any career or pre-professional program:
- The social science specialization within the liberal studies concentration provides excellent preparation for graduate school (including law school).
Although there is no recommended “pre-law” major, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “prospective lawyers should develop proficiency in writing and speaking, reading, researching, analyzing, and thinking logically—skills needed to succeed both in law school and in the profession. Regardless of major, a multidisciplinary background is recommended.”
- Other prospective law students may want to consider the individualized studies concentration, which provides flexibility in choosing electives related to the area in which prospective lawyers want to specialize.
For example, prospective patent lawyers need a strong background in engineering or science, and future tax lawyers must have extensive knowledge of accounting.
- The physical sciences concentration is a good choice for students who wish to attend medical, dental, pharmacy, or veterinary school.
