Goodwin professors receive national science foundation grant, september 26, 2006
Goodwin College of Professional Studies faculty members (from left to right) Drs.Richard
Chiou, associate professor of applied engineering technology; Yongjin
(James) Kwon, assistant professor of applied engineering technology; Horacio Sosa, senior associate dean; and Mira Lalovic, program manager, received a three-year, $458,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for the project “E-Quality for Manufacturing (EQM) Integrated with Web-Enabled Production Systems for Engineering Technology Education.”
The project is based on the premise that in factories of the future, the processes involved with design, manufacturing, and business will be integrated through the Internet. With this in mind, this project seeks to make significant advances in the area of Internet-based quality. The most novel aspect of this project, according to Dr. Chiou, is the integration of multidisciplinary web-based quality control topics into the existing core discipline of advanced manufacturing engineering technology. Within the manufacturing industry, web-based gauging, measurement, inspection, diagnostic systems, and quality control have become critical issues in the integration with e-manufacturing systems and management.
Ultimately, Goodwin’s NSF project aims to reinforce ongoing initiatives to revitalize the regional manufacturing sector by training highly skilled graduates to meet the demands of new advanced technologies, while at the same time addressing the anticipated attrition caused by an aging workforce.
