School of Education Hosts Second Annual Virtual Symposium, March 23-25, 2010

, October 2, 2009 —

Drexel University’s School of Education will host the second annual live and online Virtual Symposium on March 23-25, 2010, broadcasted from Drexel University, in conjunction with Wainhouse Research and the World Bank Institute’s Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) in Beijing. The GDLN, a partnership of more than120 recognized global institutions, is a World Bank Institute initiative which promotes the use of distance learning technologies in education and capacity building around the world.

The symposium will develop a network of university scholars and educational practitioners from China, the U.S. and around the world, to discuss best practices and challenges in promoting educational access and equity through technology.

This year’s Virtual Symposium builds upon the theme “Education for Everyone: Expanding Access Through Technology.” Distance learning, Open Source Courseware, e-books, wikis, and many other innovative technologies have forever impacted the education fields by connecting any topic in any discipline to any learner in any place. Even individuals in remote communities can now access unlimited information for free, if they have an Internet connection. This also provides more possibilities for international collaboration, knowledge building, and sharing of best practices.

This conference will showcase these best practices by building a community of scholars and professionals with expertise in the field. The symposium will highlight innovations, as well as look at possible ways to overcome the challenges poor and rural communities face in gaining access to this technology. A major feature of the symposium is the ability to share experiences among peers in both developing and developed countries. Once again, the Symposium will be hosted in two locations: Beijing and Philadelphia. Having two centers or poles creates a format that encompasses different cultural and regional perspectives as a starting point for the discussion and weaves them through the entire program.
