Abi Aghayere, Ph.D., Named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for School of Technology & Professional Studies

Goodwin College of Professional Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Abi Aghayere, Ph.D., P.Eng., as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the School of Technology & Professional Studies effective July 1, 2009.
Dr. Aghayere will provide general leadership and strategic direction to all of the School of Technology & Professional Studies’ academic programs under the direction of William Lynch, Ph.D., Dean of Goodwin College. He will also be responsible for direction and support of the School’s program directors, faculty and academic staff, along with encouraging and supporting faculty research and scholarship. In addition, he will be responsible for new program development and implementation, and facilitating communication both within and outside of the College, facilitating Drexel University’s tradition of academic accessibility to potential students from the local community and across the nation.
Dr. Aghayere comes to Drexel from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he most recently served as the acting chair of the Department of Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety. Concurrently, he served as a structural engineering consultant for several local, national and international firms.
During his 13-year tenure at RIT, Dr. Aghayere held several positions, including faculty associate for special duties in the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST), professor of Civil Engineering Technology, faculty associate for scholarship in CAST, associate professor and assistant professor. He was the recipient of RIT’s Outstanding Teaching award in 2004-05 and the winner of a Best Paper award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in 2003. Prior to coming to RIT, Dr. Aghayere's career included roles as a structural engineer with Halsall Associates in Toronto, a research associate and a teaching/research associate in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta, and a lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria.
Dr. Aghayere received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, majoring in structures, from the University of Alberta, his S.M. in Civil Engineering, majoring in structures, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his B.S. in Civil Engineering (with First Class Honors) from the University of Lagos in Lagos, Nigeria. Dr. Aghayere has published three structural engineering textbooks and has a fourth in progress. He has also published numerous peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles, and has made several media appearances speaking on the subject of structural safety and failures.
