| This workshop, geared toward architects, structural engineers, building and construction professionals, and others with an interest in historic preservation projects, explores the issues raised in restoration of Carpenters’ Hall. Presentations will focus on an overview of the history of Carpenters’ Hall and its role as the chief artifact of the Carpenters’ Company, the defining characteristics of the Hall as they relate to the process of restoration, research and analysis of what guides restoration, and the structural rationale used in the restoration/preservation process. |

This workshop is a unique opportunity to introduce participants to the fundamental categories of and approaches to preservation in America. Eastern State Penitentiary serves as a living case study. A brief introduction to the history of the working penitentiary will be followed by discussions of:
· The issues from 1971-2009 covering abandonment, decay, rescue, preservation, and management approaches
· Preservation philosophy as shown with the Main Gate structure
· Stabilization of the Center Tower
· Rehabilitation of the site offices in the Bertillion Building
