Michael Exler has been with the Office of the General Counsel since May 2000. With a career spent in both private practice and in the non-profit sector, Michael has a wide range of experience in the business and legal affairs of universities and academic health centers. As Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Board Secretary of Drexel University and General Counsel of the Drexel University College of Medicine, Michael is responsible for advising the President, the Board of Trustees, faculty and staff on a variety of matters in support of the University’s mission, goals and objectives.

Prior to joining Drexel, Michael served as Senior Counsel for the Johns Hopkins Health System, where he also served as Board Secretary for four Hopkins-related entities. Prior to that, he served as Associate General Counsel for the Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation based in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. His career in higher education followed seven years in the private practice of law with the Pittsburgh law firm of Kabala & Geeseman (now part of Fox Rothschild). Michael received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College (1983) and his Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University School of Law (1987), where he served on the editorial board of the Duquesne Law Review. Michael is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the American Health Lawyers Association, the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Association of Academic Health Centers – Executive Leadership Group for Legal Counsel (through 2007).

Melissa Brown joined the Office of the General Counsel in January 2011.  Melissa represents the University in connection with matters related to real estate, zoning and construction, as well as on a wide range of other areas and commercial contracts. Prior to joining Drexel, Melissa was an associate at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in the Real Estate Practice Group. At Morgan Lewis, Melissa's practice focused on real estate transactions and related areas, including leasing, development, financing and acquisitions and dispositions of commercial, multi-family and retail properties.

Melissa earned her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 2003 and her B.A. from Cornell University in 2000.  She is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Melissa was listed as a "Rising Star" in Pennsylvania Super Lawyers (2010). She is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA).

Margaret Denton joined the Office of the General Counsel in October 2011. Margaret represents the University in a wide range of matters including employment law and various business transactions, covering real estate, program initiatives, and vendor services agreements. Margaret works as lead counsel for the College of Nursing and Health Professions and the School of Public Health on a variety of issues concerning faculty-student matters, policies and procedures, program development, clinical affiliation agreements and other matters. Prior to joining the Office of General Counsel, Margaret spent more than 15 years as in-house counsel in a range of industries including banking, insurance and franchising.. Prior to working as an attorney, Margaret worked as a finance professional handling real estate debt restructures.

Margaret coordinates the OGC Pro Bono program where the team participates in the Adopt A Shelter Program managed through the Homeless Advocacy Project (HAP). She was one of the 2013 recipients of the HAP Rising Star Awards.

Margaret received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lincoln University, her Master of Business Administration Degree from Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management and her Juris Doctorate from Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Margaret serves on the Board of the Professional Women’s Roundtable of Philadelphia and is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, American Corporate Counsel Association, Delaware Valley Chapter and serves a Mentor with the Temple University Law School Women’s Law Caucus.

John Gyllenhammer joined the Office of the General Counsel in 1997. John is the chief attorney responsible for all legal matters affecting the College of Medicine, College of Nursing and Health Professions and the School of Public Health and serves as the Office’s managing attorney for all administrative, financial and personnel matters. He provides legal counsel and support to senior management, department chairs, faculty and staff in a wide variety of areas including contracts and business transactions, healthcare law, litigation prevention and management, faculty and student affairs, sponsored research, patient safety, regulatory compliance, real estate and employment law matters. John has worked in higher education law since 1992. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, John spent five years in the Legal Affairs Office at George Mason University in Virginia, from which he received his Juris Doctor. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Diana Hare joined the Office of the General Counsel in April 2003. As Chief Privacy Counsel, Diana provides privacy legal advice to the Chief Privacy Officer and Privacy & Security Committee. She advises on privacy and data security laws and regulations, including HIPAA HITECH and Pennsylvania state law. Diana additionally is lead counsel for the College of Medicine on information technology agreements and advises on legal issues relating to the College’s electronic medical systems. Diana also represents the University in various transactions and issues relating to education, healthcare, regulatory compliance, policies and procedures, and claim recoveries. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, Diana spent 15 years as in-house counsel at three major Philadelphia corporations (Cigna, SmithKline Beecham, and Fleer).

Diana is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Association of Corporate Counsel and its Delaware Valley Chapter (DELVACCA), the American Health Lawyers Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and the International Visitors Council. JuHwon Lee joined the Office of the General Counsel in May of 2005.

JuHwon is the Office’s primary attorney in labor and employment matters, providing counsel and representation to various departments, including the Human Resources Department, Office of Equality and Disability, and Student Affairs. He provides education instruction to clients to increase awareness and availability of alternate dispute resolution processes available to clients within the University to resolve potential legal claims.

Prior to joining Drexel, he spent five years in private practice representing various local universities (including Drexel University) and two years in the City Solicitor’s Office in the Civil Rights Unit representing the police department.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the United States District Courts for the Middle and Eastern Districts of Pennsylvania. JuHwon is also active in the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania (APABA-PA).

Tim Raynor joined the Office of the General Counsel in October 2006.

He represents the University on a wide variety of matters, including intellectual property protection and licensing, research compliance and administration, policy drafting and interpretation, benefits administration, and internet and computer law matters. He also works with various University colleges and departments on initiatives to grow relationships with corporate and government entities.

Prior to coming to Drexel, Tim served as Director of Intellectual Property for the University of Pennsylvania.

He received both his Bachelor of Science degree (with high distinction) and Master of Science degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and his law degree from the Temple University Beasley School of Law. He is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA).

Priya Sankar joined the Office of the General Counsel in June 2006. Priya represents the University in a wide variety of matters including research, privacy and compliance, and policy drafting, interpretation and implementation. Priya works with the Office of Research and University researchers in developing research affiliations and collaborations as well as establishing services and resources supporting the University’s research enterprise. She also provides legal advice to the Vice President, Chief Compliance & Privacy Officer and his staff. Priya jointly manages the University record management program with the University Archivist.

Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, she spent five years in-house at Schering-Plough Corporation and Exelon Corporation. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from George Washington University and her Juris Doctorate from the Temple University School of Law. Nicole Maltz Sugarman joined the Office of the General Counsel in March 2013. Nicole represents the University on a wide range of issues including academic and student affairs, employment law matters, athletics, and litigation. Nicole also negotiates and provides counsel on various business transactions, including institutional governance, vendor services, use of facilities, and affiliations. Prior to joining Drexel University, Nicole served as an attorney in the General Counsel’s Office at both the University of Delaware and Johns Hopkins University, and as an associate at Ballard Spahr in the Labor & Employment and Higher Education Practice Groups.

Nicole holds a B.A. from Duke University and an M.A. from the Department of Education, Policy, and Social Analysis at Columbia University's Teachers College, where she studied the ways in which governance institutions, political ideologies, and competing interests, both within and outside of the education community, influence the content, form, and functioning of schooling. Nicole received her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she served as Managing Editor of the Journal for Law & Social Change. She is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys.

Tami Wible joined the Office of the General Counsel in October 2009.

Tami represents the University in a wide range of legal matters including student affairs, human resources, employment law matters and litigation, and provides legal support on a wide variety of contracts and business transactions. She advises University officials, department chairs, faculty and staff on contracts, faculty and student issues, policies and procedures, litigation prevention and management and other legal issues affecting higher education institutions. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, Tami's legal career was spent in private practice in Philadelphia, concentrating in employment law and complex commercial litigation. She was the Assistant General Counsel at a large Philadelphia law firm prior to joining the OGC.

Tami received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her law degree from Temple University School of Law (now known as Temple University Beasley School of Law), where she was among a group of law students who founded the Temple Political & Civil Rights Law Review, for which she served as the first co-Executive Editor.

Tami is a hearing committee member of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board, an arbitrator for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and is active in the Temple American Inn of Court. She is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the United States Supreme Court. She is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Kelly McCardell joined the University in 1989. She has been with the Office of General Counsel since its formation in 1996.

Kelly manages the University’s property/casualty insurance program and worker’s compensation program. Her responsibilities include assessing the University’s risk and managing the appropriate insurance coverage. She also manages all claims covered by the University’s insurance policies, as well as assist legal counsel regarding general liability, workers compensation and auto claims. She advises all departments regarding insurance and indemnification provisions contained in contracts, risks involved with new programming, and ways in which existing programs can be operated while protecting the University against unnecessary losses.

She also serves as the risk manager for two of the University’s subsidiaries, Academic Properties, Inc. and Drexel e-Learning, Inc. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, Kelly served as a Financial Analyst in the Treasurer’s Office.

Kelly received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Delaware.

Christina Chennat joined the Office of Risk Management in October 2013. Christina is responsible for assisting the Director in administering the College of Medicine’s risk and claims management and insurance programs. She coordinates the defense of the College’s litigation matters with legal counsel. She also advises the College on risk mitigation, litigation prevention and management, and insurance coverage issues and conducts risk management educational programs.

Prior to joining Drexel, Christina was an Associate Counsel in the Legal & Risk Services Department at Yale New Haven Health System as well as a Claims Administrator at Thomas Jefferson University Department of Risk Management & Insurance. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bryn Mawr College, Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University School of Law-Camden, and Master of Public Health from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is also a Fellow of the Claims & Litigation Management Alliance (CLM) and received the Certified Litigation Management Professional (CLMP) designation from the CLM’s Litigation Management Institute.

Brian Cunningham joined the Office of Risk Management in February 2011. Brian helps manage all University insurance programs, including the property, casualty, educators and medical malpractice insurance programs. He also manages claims for approximately 250 physicians and the University’s allied health professionals. As Chief Operating Officer of Dragon Risk Limited, he handles the day to day operations of the insurance company that provides professional liability insurance for Drexel. Brian has a great deal of experience working with medical malpractice insurance programs, defense counsel, plaintiff’s counsel, judges, MCARE, excess insurance carriers and reinsurers, as well as government regulators and insurance brokers.

Prior to joining Drexel, Brian spent seven years in the Office of Risk Services at Temple University Health System administrating the medical malpractice insurance program. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Tufts University and his Juris Doctorate from Temple University Beasley School of Law in 2009.

Beverly Perrone joined the Office of Risk Management in May 2014 after working at a small firm defending employers and their insurance carriers against Pennsylvania and New Jersey workers’ compensation claims.   Ms. Perrone’s primary responsibilities are assisting the Associate Vice President of Risk Management process and manage workers’ compensation claims and auto claims under the Property and Casualty Program and assisting in the day to day operations of the department. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Loyola College.  She received her Juris Doctorate from Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Leslie Quinn came to the General Counsel’s Office in 2002, after spending almost 2 years as the President’s scheduling secretary and 4 years as the Assistant to the Sr. Vice President for Finance and Treasurer.

Ms. Quinn’s primary responsibilities include assisting the Associate Vice President for Risk Management in the day to day operations of the department through educational outreach to Drexel's academic and administrative departments, as well as to Drexel's subsidiaries, and providing them with risk management tools to help minimize and prevent the University's exposures to loss and promote the stability and preservation of University assets. She is also responsible for reviewing insurance provisions in contracts and agreements; assisting in the development and revision of Risk Management policies; overseeing the University's Accident Review Committee to review auto accidents and determine driver eligibility, and assisting with special projects. 

She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Frostburg State University.

Gail Schlemback has been with the Office of Risk Management since June 2003. She assists in the administration of the Workers Compensation Program and assists the Director in the management and oversight of all medical malpractice claims and the College’s medical malpractice mediation program. She is involved with collecting and maintaining data from the clinical departments relating to incidents, claims and lawsuits as well as obtaining information required by the malpractice insurers relating to qualifications and claim histories of all physicians and other healthcare providers. Prior to joining Drexel, she served as a legal assistant in a private law firm that specialized in plaintiff’s personal injury and medical malpractice litigation. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Drexel University College of Nursing & Health Professions.

Pat Buck joined the Office of the General Counsel in March 2001. She manages all administrative, financial, and operational matters for the Office of the General Counsel. She is the Administrator for the Contract Protocol Review Process for the College of Medicine. She has 35 years administrative experience in the healthcare industry.

She received her Associates Degree from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (Philadelphia University). Pat is a member of the Association of Legal Administrators and sits on the Board of Directors for the Philadelphia Chapter as Secretary.

Nancy Cox joined the Office of the General Counsel in April 2013. She provides administrative and secretarial support to the Managing Attorney, Chief Litigation Services Attorney, and Assistant General Counsel, as well as serving as a supplemental receptionist for the office. Nancy also provides support to the Director, Legal Administration as required. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, Nancy’s legal career was primarily in the private practice sector. She obtained her Paralegal Certification in 2005 from Camden County College. Nancy is a member of the National Association of Legal Professionals (NALS). She sits on the Board of Directors, of the Philadelphia Chapter, as Bulletin Editor.

Tina Dwyer joined the Office of the General Counsel in May 2000. Kimberly Lewis joined the Office of the General Counsel in September 2009, after providing administrative support in Human Resources for nearly 5 years. 

Kimberly continues to provide administrative support as the first point of contact in the Office of the General Counsel. She provides administrative support to attorneys and also provides assistance to the Director of Legal Administration on various projects. Vicki McKee has been with the University since 1985. She joined the office during its formation in 1996.

Vicki is the Director of Legal Administration for the Office of the General Counsel, supports the Senior Vice President and General Counsel and also serves as the office manager for the department, responsible for the office’s administrative, financial and operational matters.

As the assistant to the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, she is responsible for providing notice to all Trustees regarding Board and Executive Committee meetings, facilitating their attendance, and providing support as required; assisting with the preparation of all materials for their quarterly meetings and maintaining all required informational resources related to the Trustees and the Board.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Temple University.

Megan joined the Office of the General Counsel in September 2007.
