Nick DiStasio, BS, 2013
Nick will be graduating in June 2013 with a BS in Biomedical Engineering, concentration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. He will begin his Whitaker Fellowship in September in Grenoble, France at the Grenoble Institute of Technology, MINATEC campus, under the supervision of Dr. Catherine Picart. Dr. Picart is a pioneer in the areas of biomaterials and tissue engineering with over 76 publications, in particular utilizing the layer-by-layer method of constructing biocompatible polymers. The goal of Nick's research is to develop a novel platform for controlling skeletal muscle stem cell growth and differentiation. This project will contribute directly to better understanding the fundamental processes underlying skeletal muscle at the cellular level, potentially leading to more effective and efficient treatments in muscle pathologies.
This is Nick's second international research experience, the first being a co-op in the Netherlands at Utrecht University's virus lab in the department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases. He intends to integrate these and future experiences to develop new and longlasting international collaborations between Drexel University and other research institutions across the globe.
