The Application Process

One of the more difficult, and sometimes daunting, parts of applying for fellowships is simply deciding what to apply for. Begin your search by looking carefully through our award listings for programs that sound interesting and that you are (or might become) eligible for.

Research the awards in greater depth on the program websites, many of which are wonderful and a few of which are lousy. If the website lists prior winners of the award, take a look at those and see if you feel like you could be one of those people.

Look at the application itself, generally available on the website. On some sites, you may have to register to see the application. Applications will of course all be a bit different from one another, but they typically include the following elements:

  • Online Application
  • A Personal Statement, usually 1-2 pages
  • Additional essays
These will often have to do with your suitability for the specific award. Here you might talk about your research interests, for example, or your life ambitions. They may be in the form of short answers on the online application or they may be free-standing essays.
  • 2-4 letters of recommendation
  • Official transcript

Each of these components is a vital piece of your application and none should be taken for granted by you. Use the Application Timetable to help you stay on track as you prepare your fellowship application, and be sure to see the Drexel Fellowships Office Top Pieces of Advice for applicants.
