Dr. MinJun Kim Awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship to Continue Research in Early HIV Detection

Dr. MinJun Kim Drexel’s Dr. MinJun Kim, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM), was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers. The fellowship will allow Kim to complete his sabbatical research in early HIV detection through the study of single molecule analysis in collaboration with scientists at the Max Plank Institute in Germany. 

At the Max Plank Institute, Kim will be working with the Science of Light team to study protein complexes and the electric signal of a nano-device created by his team used to detect HIV. The nano-device is cheaper to produce than the current HIV detection system of Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and it is microscope free requiring a nanoliter of antibody for testing. The nano-chip will be commercialized next year for HIV detection. Kim will begin his sabbatical research at the Max Plank Institute in June 2012.

Kim has joint appointments in Drexel’s MEM department and the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yonsei University in Korea and his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University. He completed his doctoral degree in engineering at Brown University and was awarded the Simon Ostrach Fellowship. Kim was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Rowland Institute in Harvard University. He was recently awarded the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Louis & Bessie Stein Fellowship, the Drexel Career Development Award, the Human Frontier Science Program Young Investigator Award and Army Research Office Young Investigator Award.
