Junior Bobby Miller chose to major in Digital Media because of the program's scope. "You are encouraged to dabble in all sorts of media and find your niche," Bobby explains. His niche has gravitated toward video production, but with an emphasis on Web-friendly formats that allow him to capitalize on more outlets for exposure. "Because what's the point of making a short film if no one is going to see it?"
And people are seeing his work. Bobby has entered his films into numerous festivals and competitions. His short films have been featured at the Algonquin Film Festival, SmogDance, the Indianapolis Underground Film Festival, the Hi Mom! Film Festival, and WESTfest, where his animated short "@%#!" won an Orion Award for Best Screenplay. One of his short films, "Optimistic," has aired on WYBE's Philadelphia Stories television series and made it to the top 50 for Triggerstreet.com's Third Annual Online Film Festival. His submission to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's Project Greenlight competition placed him in the Top 250 Directors category. Recently, one of his short films was picked up by MTV for possible future broadcast. That movie features a walk through Center City with a chicken, which presented certain challenges for the budding filmmaker.
"The good thing about chickens is you don't get any lip from them. I'm pretty sure they don't have any lips. The bad thing about them is that they have no sense of direction, even when you are directing them. If you ever direct a chicken, be prepared to go through some serious footage."
Whether coaxing a star turn out of poultry, updating his Rigged Productions Web site, or drawing his Stickman Theatre comic strip for Drexel's weekly paper, The Triangle, Bobby Miller is always busy. After graduating, he is considering film school, or maybe he'll bypass that by selling the feature screenplay he's working on. One thing is certain, this creative digital media major has the drive, determination, and talent to succeed.
