When Jackie Cooney came to Drexel, she had every intention of studying graphic design, but she ended up doing something completely different, something she likes a lot more.

Jackie quickly realized she preferred people contact over sitting by herself for hours in front of a computer screen. In high school, she had interned at the local newspaper; she was involved in public speaking and the debate club; and she took part in theater productions. She decided she would be more comfortable majoring in communication and, after some unique professional experiences, Jackie has never looked back.

On her first co-op, Jackie signed up with MTV, working in promotions. She even turned her commuting time on the train from Philly to New York City's Times Square to her advantage by networking with fellow commuters. She met journalists as well as staff from Late Night with David Letterman.

When she returned to campus from her co-op, Jackie worked for Drexel's WKDU radio station dubbing, logging, editing, and digitizing tape; and setting up remote broadcast locations. With that experience under her belt, she landed an internship at Q102, one of Philadelphia's leading radio stations. Now she's set to really challenge her dream - creating her own radio show.

But Jackie's activities are not limited to radio and television. She recently raised money for the Nicholas P. Pippino Scholarship Fund by participating in a 5K run. After the race, she wrote a personal account of the experience that was published in The Triangle, Drexel's weekly newspaper. Jackie also devotes time to playing intramural soccer and is a member of Phi Sigma Sigma, a social sorority on campus.

With her determination, talent, and commitment, Jackie Cooney's future in communications — radio, print, or television — is clearly off to an excellent start.
