TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A test used to measure an individual's ability to understand English. Nearly every college and university in the U.S. requires international students to submit a TOEFL score for admission. Requirements vary from university to university, so it is best to check with the institution you wish to attend about their particular score requirements.

There are two kinds of TOEFL tests you can take in the U.S.: the International TOEFL and the Institutional TOEFL.

International TOEFL test scores can be submitted for admission to any U.S. university. The International TOEFL is in the process of changing from a computer-based (CBT) to an internet-based (iBT) format. The iBT is currently being administered in the U.S. and will be launched throughout the world in 2006.

The International TOEFL is not given at Drexel University, but there are test sites in the Philadelphia area. For more information, visit the TOEFL website or call 1-800-GO-TOEFL for an appointment.

The Institutional TOEFL is a multiple choice, paper-based test. Drexel ELC administers an Institutional TOEFL that is accepted by the Drexel University International Admissions Office as an alternative to the International TOEFL.

The results of the Drexel ELC Institutional TOEFL are ONLY good for admission to Drexel University. Students who are applying to other institutions and want their scores reported to those admissions offices should take the International TOEFL.

SPEAK test: At Drexel University, all non-native English-speaking teaching assistants are screened for language proficiency through an oral proficiency examination called the SPEAK test—an institutional version of the Test of Spoken English. Scores on the SPEAK test are matched with a recommendation for a teaching assignment commensurate with performance on the test. For more information, see SPEAK test standards for instructional assignments, or click here for information on services available for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs).
