Special Topics and Electives      

Special topics and Electives are afternoon classes open to all non-native English speakers. You do not have to be a Drexel University or Drexel ELC student to register. However, enrollment for special topic classes is limited to 15 students and full-time ELC students will be given first priority. For more information, please call, email, or visit the ELC (see contact information above).

Courses for Fall 2008 (September 29 - December 9)


English in Everyday Life, (levels 1-2)
Tuesday & Thursday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
This course helps students to be able to handle everyday situations such as going to the store or going to the bank, asking for directions, using the telephone and many other things.


Fundamentals of Grammar, (levels 2-3)
Tuesday & Thursday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
In this course, students will learn and practice such areas of grammar as the usage of verb tenses, indirect speech, conditional sentences and clause structure at the intermediate level.


Vocabulary Development (levels 3-4)
Tuesday & Thursday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
In this course, students will develop strategies to improve their academic, technical, and general vocabulary. They will discover common English roots and improve their reading skills.


Exploring American Life & Language, (levels 3-5)
Monday & Wednesday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
Students will practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing while learning about life in Philadelphia and American culture. Includes research and visits to interesting places in the city. The final project will be to create a short movie about these experiences.


Advanced Grammatical Analysis, (levels 4-6)
Monday & Wednesday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
This course will provide instruction in advanced English grammar. Class activities will include practice in such areas as usage of verb tenses, indirect speech, conditional sentences, clause structure, and the passive voice. You will have a better understanding and ability to use grammar in writing and speaking.


Oral Presentation Skills, (levels 4-6)
Monday & Wednesday, 3:00 - 4:20 p.m.
This course will focus on preparing, presenting and evaluating presentations. Class activities will include learning effective ways of engaging your audience and practicing techniques using language, your voice, and your body to improve the audience's ability to easily understand you. You will increase your comfort, confidence, and competence in speaking to groups in English.


TOEFL iBT Preparation Combo, (levels 4-6)
Monday - Thursday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
6 hours of classes per week: 3 hours of preparation for the iBT Academic Speaking section PLUS 3 hours of preparation for the Reading and Writing section. Additional cost of $400.


TOEFL iBT Preparation for Speaking & Listening, (levels 4-6)
Tuesday & Thursday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
This course prepares individuals to succeed on the spoken section of the TOEFL iBT. It will provide practice for taking this section of the exam, as well as strategies to help improve performance.


Idioms in American Culture, (levels 5-6)
Monday & Wednesday, 1:30 - 2:50 p.m.
In this course, students will learn more advanced vocabulary and idioms that are used in American media and conversation. They will listen to interesting radio broadcasts and read other sources to understand how these idioms are used in everyday life.
