Allison Rose Fellows

Each term, the English Language Center offers one or more Allison Rose Fellowships to continuing full-time students. The fellowships are given in memory of an ELC teacher who taught during our first session in the Fall of 1989. These awards are designed to improve language skills by exposing students to native English speakers in a work setting.

Allison Rose Fellows receive tuition remission of $1000 in exchange for 120 hours of office work at the Center during the term.

These are the minimal qualifications for the applicants:
  1. At least 1 term of full-time intensive study in Level 3 or above
  2. Dedication to mastering English
  3. Regular attendance in all classes
  4. Timely completion of all assignments
  5. Full participation in electives and activities program
  6. Sufficient English skills for carrying out office responsibilities
  7. Reliability
  8. Availability for training during the break between terms
Teacher and staff recommendations are considered.

The Allison Rose Fellow is appointed by the director upon recommendation of the administrative, program and marketing coordinators.

Nami Komiyama Allison Rose Fellowship At The ELC
by Nami Komiyama from Japan

I started my last term at the ELC during fall this year, working as an Allison Rose Fellow. Before the fall term started, I didn't plan to get a job at the ELC, because I didn't want to be so busy in my last term. However, I decided to work at the ELC, since I wanted to get some work experience in the US, which would be valuable for my future and good for my resume.

I actually really enjoyed the job and learned a lot during these three months. During the orientation at the beginning of the term, I made many friends and got to know about many different cultures. The most unforgettable and enjoyable event that I organized was A Taste of Japan. I organized this event alone with the help of the other Japanese students at the ELC. We made a lot of Japanese food, and we even danced Para Para for fun. Everybody enjoyed themselves. Min Seok & I planned all the other activities together with advice from Elizabeth, and we really enjoyed those activities.

I want to say thanks to everybody at the ELC, especially my wonderful co-worker and friend, Min Seok. He is always cheerful and helpful. I wouldn't know what to do without him. I really enjoyed working as an Allison Rose Fellow. The experience that I gained from this job is priceless!

Min Seok Kang My Experience as an Alison Rose Fellow
by Min Seok Kang from Korea

"No way!" "You have got to be kidding me!" "I don't believe you !" These were the first sentences from my friends when I told them that I got a scholarship at the ELC. My parents were also very surprised because of this unbelievable news. Nobody believed it because when I lived in Korea, I always drank beer and hung out with my friend instead of doing my homework or studying. To tell the truth, I was kicked out by my parents to the U.S so I would stop wasting my time. I had to send them the letter which proved that I had received this fellowship, and then they finally believed me.

Actually I decided to be an Allison Rose scholarship student a long time ago. When I came here, I had an orientation for the ELC. During the orientation, I met the spring term's Allison Rose student workers who helped me get used to studying English in the U.S. After orientation, I heard information about the Allison Rose Fellowship offered by the ELC. I thought it would be not only good to get experience but it would also help to improve my English, so I decided to apply to be an Allison Rose student worker.

It was not easy to be an Allison Rose student worker because my English was limited. I couldn't speak English well, so I thought I didn't have enough skills. However, I wanted to not be a coward and try it anyway. I thought like that and decided to not think too much, and just applied for it. Finally, I got the job! I'm really thankful to the ELC for choosing me.

Working in English was much harder than I expected. I almost died of embarrassment because of my lack of my English skills when I started to work. I had to plan all activities during the break, so I tried to find all the available tickets and discounts. Sometimes I had to make phone calls to find good deals. To tell the truth, it was the most difficult experience during my U.S life. I was extremely exhausted and this experience gave me new motivation for moving forward.

Everything was pretty difficult for me. At times I even thought I was not fit to do this job. However, I managed to do everything because many people helped me. Especially Nami, my co-worker, encouraged me many times, so I was not alone. Whenever I had trouble with work, Nami gave me good ideas and we worked together to find a solution. I'm very glad that Nami was my partner. Also my boss Elizabeth, Mona and ELC teachers helped me in many ways. I'm really thankful to everybody.

Being an Allison Rose student worker was the best experience I have had so far. I will never forget it and I learned many things from it. Every moment at ELC, every person at ELC and every experience at ELC is AWESOME in my life. Thank you so much and love to all!!!
