RecycleMania 2012

Recyclemania 2012

January 22 – March 31
What Is RecycleMania?
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more. For more information about the structure and rules of the competition and the various contests, visit the RecyleMania website.

The official dates for RecycleMania 2012 have been set. Preseason practice weeks will run January 22 to February 4. The official competition will kick-off on February 5 and extend eight weeks to March 31.

RecycleMania’s Goals
  • Have a fair and friendly recycling competition.
  • Increase recycling participation by students and staff.
  • Heighten awareness of schools' waste management and recycling programs.
  • Expand economic opportunities while addressing environmental issues in a positive way.
  • Lower waste generated on-campus by reducing, reusing, and recycling.
  • Have the competition act as a catalyst for colleges and universities to build and expand waste reduction programs on campus.
Drexel’s Goals for 2012

Here at Drexel, our goal is not only to compete with other schools nationally and locally, but to compete against ourselves and top the previous year’s results. This will be Drexel’s fifth year participating in RecycleMania. In 2011, Drexel finished No. 5 in Pennsylvania (out of 23 participants) and No. 92 nationally (out of 288 participants) in overall recycling rate.

Campus Conservation Nationals

In addition to competing in the annual RecycleMania competition, Drexel will be competing in the new Campus Conservation Nationals. With 130+ schools signed up and 1500+ buildings enrolled, this stands to be the largest energy and water reduction competition in history. From February 6 through April 23, participating colleges and universities will compete to achieve the greatest possible energy and water reductions in residence halls. Each University will need to select a three-week period during the contest time period to track their results. Drexel will gather results during the time period of February 13th through March 4th.

How You Can Get Involved

Drexel University recycles approximately 600 tons of waste each year, more than 25% of the University’s waste stream. Drexel Green’s Recycling How-To Guide [PDF] has a complete listing of all the materials Drexel recycles and instructions on how to have them recycled. Please post this information in your residence, work, or study area to spread the information to your classmates and colleagues. Materials that count for the 2012 RecycleMania competition include: mixed paper, cardboard, and electronic equipment, including computers, printers, and other office electronics, cell phones and other hand-held devices, televisions, stereos, consumer electronics, ancillary items (chargers, cords, head sets, CDs), and consumer electronic batteries. (Only electronics collected from Monday, February 13, through Wednesday, March 14, will be counted toward the competition.)

Special Recycling Events

Drexel Green will host a RecycleMania event on each of Drexel’s three Philadelphia campuses to collect sensitive documents for shredding and other recyclables to be counted for the competition. Drexel’s preferred shredding vendor, DocuVault, will provide shredding services, while Drexel Green will collect other materials and have information and refreshments available for participants. The schedule for these collection events is.

  • Queen Lane Medical Campus: February 13th, 10am-2pm
  • Center City Hahnemann Campus (in front of Bellet Building): February 27th, 10am-2pm
  • University City Main Campus (Race Street between 33rd and 34th Streets): March 12th, 10am-2pm

If your department has a large quantity of materials to be recycled, please e-mail recycle@drexel.edu to arrange for a pick-up.
