5th Annual Philly Spring Clean-up

Drexel will once again take part in the city's annual Philly Spring Cleanup. This year’s theme is “Keep Up the Sweep Up,” and the goal is to put an end to litter and illegal dumping. Volunteers will be divided into groups and sent to their designated clean-up locations. To register as a volunteer, please e-mail citycleanup@drexel.edu.
Location for Check-in: Race Street between 33rd & 34th Streets
Time: Registration: 8am, Clean-up: 9am-2pm

Creating Gardens for Powel Elementary School

Drexel Urban Growers is sponsoring an event to build vegetable gardens at the Powel Elementary School. They are restoring twelve existing vegetable beds and planting them with new vegetable seedlings. To register to volunteer email: drexelurbangrowers@gmail.com

Tree Giveaway Pick-up

For a second year Drexel has partnered with the City of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation department for a free tree giveaway. This year trees were offered to employees, students, and alumni who own property (and a yard) within the city of Philadelphia. Tree pick up will take place in the Vidas Athletic Complex parking lot.

START A GARDEN WITH DREXEL URBAN GROWERS

All students living near the Summer/Winter Garden are welcome to join Drexel Urban Growers in fixing up our vegetable beds to prepare them for planting.  We're looking for volunteers to help with watering to establish the vegetable seeds we will be planting. All of those that help with the garden plot will be welcome to participate in the harvest at the end of the spring term. To volunteer email Nicholas McDonough at drexelurbangrowers@gmail.com.

Bike Commuter Race

We’re promoting bicycling throughout Earth Week (Monday April 16-Sunday April 22) as a healthy, cheap, and fast way to commute. We’re offering a $50 gift certificate and prizes to the top 2 bike commuters at Drexel. How to win $50 and prizes from REI:

  • You must be affiliated with Drexel.
  • Submit your bike mileage daily online
  • To calculate mileage feel free to use MapQuest or your bike odometer.
  • The person who commutes the most miles during Earth Week (Monday April 16-Sunday April 22) wins.

Bike Maintenance Class

The Drexel Sierra Club and Keswick Cycles of West Philadelphia will host an introductory bike maintenance class. Learn the basics of bike repair and maintenance as well as how to diagnose more serious problems before they ruin your ride! To register, email: saw65@drexel.edu.

Clothing Swap

The Drexel Sierra Club will hold a clothing swap on campus. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to donate gently used clothing and shoes by bringing them to the event. Anyone is welcome to take items as well. Leftover items will be donated to Philly AIDS Thrift.

The Drexel University A Healthier U Walking Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday. Join us for a 30-minute walk. Meet new friends, enjoy good company, and get some exercise. Join the Academy’s Center for Environmental Policy as we kick off our Bicentennial Town Square Series, “New Questions for an Old Planet,” with a program on urban heat islands and their role in global climate change. The program will feature Dr. Laurence S. Kalkstein, of the Department of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Miami, and Dr. David J. Sailor, of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Portland State University.

After the presentation, representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability will join the speakers for a panel discussion about heat mitigation strategies in Philadelphia.

Philly Activism Panel

The Drexel Sierra Club will host this event. A panel of speakers that includes Marien Massey from Animal ACTivists of Philly, Iris Bloom from Protecting Our Waters, and Myriam Fallon of Greenpeace Philly will discuss animal rights, hydrofracking, and climate change.

The sixth event in the Sustainability Education Series will be a presentation by Sally McCabe from Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. She will talk about gardening for novice to experienced gardeners: 4-season gardening - preparing the spring garden; food gardening; small space gardening; season extenders; organic pest control; soil building. Highlights include:

  • Drexel Green Earth Day Scavenger Hunt – The Drexel Green Scavenger Hunt will challenge teams of two or more to photograph themselves at specific green-themed spots around campus. The team that finds the most items will win a $250 gift certificate to
    JG Domestic Restaurant. Teams can sign up on the day of the hunt or preregister to receive a head start and bonus points. Follow Drexel Green on Facebook or Twitter to receive extra clues in advance of the scavenger hunt. Preregister at bit.ly/H4LMVy.
  • Recycled Material Sculpture Contest – Create an Earth Day themed sculpture from any type of recycled materials. A $250 gift certificate to JG Domestic Restaurant will be awarded to best individual or team submission. Event attendees will vote for their favorite sculpture, and the winner will be announced at the end of the event. If you have the need for recycling material please reach out to recycle@drexel.edu.   • Bike Workshops – Keswick Cycle will conduct demonstrations on basic bike repair; how to properly lock a bike; how to safely navigate Philly by bike, and other useful tips for bike commuters and enthusiasts.
  • Tree Planting Demonstration – Jim Vecchione, from Drexel Facilities, will hold demonstrations at 11:30 and 12:30 on how to plant a tree.
  • Farmer’s Market – Offering local produce and products.
  • Drexel Sierra Club Vegan Bake Sale – Purchase homemade vegan and fair trade baked goods to support eating organic and local foods.
  • Drexel Sierra Club Homemade and Organic Cleaning Supplies – Purchase homemade cleaning supplies made with organic, natural materials. They're just as effective if not more than store bought (and cheaper). Comes with instructions on how to make your own.
  • Shoe Collection – Bring your old shoes to be reused or recycled.
  • Cell Phone and Accessory Recycling – eCycle will collect your old cell phones and cell phone accessories.

2012 Earth Day Tree Planting

ACADEMY OF NATURAL SCIENCES OF DREXEL UNIVERSITY EARTH DAY AT THE PHILADELPHIA SCIENCE FESTIVAL

Academy scientists and the Center for Environmental Policy will set up outside the museum along with 80 other exhibitors as part of the Philadelphia Science Festival. The festival includes family-friendly experiments, activities, and games. Talk to Academy scientists about their environmental and ecosystem research and learn how you can help to preserve natural resources.

Weekend Warriors Saturday Bike Ride

Introduction to Philadelphia’s urban bike trails connecting you to a system of excellent mountain and road biking. Students are encouraged to rent bikes from Drexel Bike Share. Event is open to Drexel students only. Registration: Monday April 16 - Friday April 20 at the Drexel climbing wall between 12pm-8pm.
Location: Kelly Drive Loop to Fairmount Park (10-16 miles)
