Requesting Accommodations
In higher education, the individual with a disability(ies) is responsible for requesting auxiliary aids and services. As part of the interactive process, the Office of Disability Services (ODS) will collaborate with individuals to discuss the educational environment to minimize the impact of the disability(ies) at Drexel University. All students and employees have the opportunity to request accommodations and services on the Intake Form. The Intake Form is completed at ODS upon an individual’s request to register with ODS for the receipt of accommodations due to disability. Requirements exist for students and employees as a means of documenting conditions/impairments which are substantially limiting to the individual in a learning and/or working environment.
An individual’s preference will be a primary factor in the interactive process of determining auxiliary aids and services. Although the individual’s preferences will be considered, there may be other accommodations that result in equal access. The final decision for approved auxiliary aids and services will be the University’s. All requests for auxiliary aids and services require a seventy-two hour advance notice. ODS will make every effort to secure requested academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services, if supported by the documentation and found to be reasonable by the University. When students register for classes, they are encouraged to share their request for the upcoming term with ODS as soon as possible. Employees are encouraged to register with ODS, if accommodations are being requested.
Individuals with disabilities need to evaluate the content of courses, work environments, meetings, and events to ensure that the appropriate request is being made to ODS. ODS encourages students to evaluate the content and learning outcome of the course, prior to registration. When changes occur, students need to communicate their requests to ODS. All employees with disabilities are encouraged to make requests for reasonable and appropriate accommodations to allow for the timely delivery of services.
