Referring a Student, Employee, or Campus Guest

When to Refer

  1. If a student, employee, or campus guest makes a request for an accommodation, or modification due to a medical condition and does not have an accommodation verification letter (AVL), refer to the student to the Office of Disability Services (ODS).
  2. If a student, employee, or campus guest has an AVL and makes a request for an accommodation or modification due to a medical condition which is not listed on the AVL, refer the student to ODS.

Contact information for ODS can be found at: Contact Us.

How to Refer

The process of referring a student, employee, or campus guest to the Office of Disability Services (ODS) can be a sensitive issue to address. ODS recommends the following referring statements for faculty and staff who are unsure of how to refer people who are seeking accommodations due to disability:

“I am referring you to the Office of Disability Services on campus because all requests for medically related modifications start in Disability Services.”

“In order to consider your request for a change in the policy or standard administration due to medical reasons, you need to discuss your needs with the Office of Disability Services.”

“Our department or college can not accept medical documentation from you or your medical provider. The office to submit this type of confidential information to is the Office of Disability Services.”

For faculty, ODS recommends including the syllabi statement each term in all of your syllabi for on-campus and on-line courses. The statement is available at: Syllabus Statement.
