LANGUAGE MINOR

Modern Languages offer minors in its eight languages listed, see the Catalog for Minors in Modern Languages. The language minor is open to all students in the University. Requirements for the language minor include:

  • 24 credit hours of course work above the first year of study including the "thesis-direction" course
  • Advanced-level Certification of Proficiency in the language
  • A minor thesis written in the target language
  • An oral defense of the thesis before a faculty committee
  • Demonstration of research skills

Requirements for Minor Thesis in a Language
Before writing the Minor Thesis, students need to fulfill their course requirements and are required to take the proficiency test. The proficiency test is a language-testing tool that demonstrates the candidate's listening, comprehension, reading, writing and speaking abilities.

Each minor's candidate is required to write a Minor Thesis under the supervision of a faculty member from the Modern Language Department at Drexel University. In keeping with the objectives of the coursework, the thesis should normally be on a topic that has been covered during the coursework or that relates to the student's area of study. The topic should reflect the candidate's interest in the language and in the country where the language is spoken. The topic can relate to literature, politics, business etc., but needs to be approved by the mentor. During his/her research, the candidate can be advised by other faculty members in regard to matters that refer directly to the topic of the thesis (i.e. can advise on bibliography).

Substantial original research is not expected, but a display of analytical skills will be highly regarded. The candidate is expected to present a written thesis proposal (two pages) before he/she writes the thesis, which will then be approved by the supervising faculty member. The abilities that should be demonstrated by a good thesis are as follows:

  • a command of language skills
  • an ability to research and to reflect critically on the relevant literature
  • an ability to state objectives clearly, to present and to argue the chosen topic clearly in the target language

Role of your mentor
The mentor is expected to:

  • provide guidance in selecting a topic
  • give the student help in locating appropriate research material (books, articles, web sites)
  • approve thesis proposal
  • advise on any problems encountered during the research and writing process
  • advise on the revision of drafts
  • advise on the final oral presentation on the thesis

Research the topic
Most of the research undertaken by the candidate will be based on previous work that has been reported in literature. The candidate must learn to use the library effectively to find the material that he/she needs (books, magazines, electronic resources).

Method
The candidate should give a summary in his/her own words of what the various authors have written on the topic. The candidate should not simply duplicate what other people have written. It is the candidate's task to analyze the significance of the material that he/she has studied and to critically reflect on the material.

Form of the thesis
The candidate and the mentor can decide the actual form of the thesis but the thesis should encompass 20-25 pages. There are several things of which the candidate should be aware:

  • the thesis needs to have an annotated bibliography and footnotes
  • the candidate should not plagiarize

When the candidate writes the thesis, he/she should do so for the benefit of an intelligent reader, who might not have the in-depth understanding of the material as the candidate has. The thesis should be intelligible to other members of the minor thesis presentation committee. The writing needs to be clear and concise. Colloquialism and slang are seldom acceptable in writing even if they may be acceptable in speech.

Oral presentation of thesis
The candidate will have to give an oral presentation of the thesis to the minor thesis committee, which consists of faculty members. He/she is required to answer questions during the presentation and the candidate might be allowed some final revision to the thesis after the oral presentation. All committee members should be given a copy of the written thesis during the eighth week of the term. The oral presentation of the minor thesis should take place in the ninth week, which will give the candidate time to revise his/her thesis in the tenth week. The due date of the minor thesis is on the last day of classes of the term. Candidates who are graduating seniors will have to adhere to a different time frame and need to inform the department and his/her mentor of the graduation status beforehand.

Grading of thesis
The minor thesis will be graded by the candidate's mentor and by the members of the minor thesis committee will be asked to offer recommendations on the candidate's performance.

The thesis format
Please go to this site, The Owl at Purdue. Its recommendations are based on the MLA Handbook of Research Papers and the candidate should follow these recommendations.
