Research and Teaching Interests
Tyson Mitman’s interests lie in the areas of subjectivity, subculture studies, visual culture, the construction of identity, issues of public space, theories of democracy and graffiti. His research is on graffiti culture, specifically, how “writers” construct their identity within the subculture, how they practice their craft and how they see themselves in relation to other forms of art and social production. He also asks how graffiti writers produce “art” both within and “outside” a capitalist system and what production in these different areas mean.
