Electives: General Education/Liberal Studies Courses

Students in any engineering major other than Computer Science or Software Engineering must take 10 courses in total. They are divided into 2 categories: Designated Courses and Undesignated Courses.
Computer Science majors refer to electives for CS majors on the Computer Science website
Software Engineering majors refer to electives for SE majors on the Computer Science website

Designated Courses: ENGL 101, ENGL 102, ENGL 103.
Each major department also has other designated course requirements - Please see the numbered list below.

1. Architectural Engineering - The three-course sequence , ARCH 141, ARCH 142 and ARCH 143 - Architecture, Man and Society offered through the College of Media Arts and Design is required (designated) of all architectural engineering students and fulfills the two-course sequence plus one other liberal studies course ECON 211 - Principles of Economics I (Micro) is also required.

2. Chemical Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective and PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics are required (designated) electives.

3. Civil Engineering - ECON 211 Principles of Economics I (Micro) and ECON 212 - Principles of Economics II (Macro) are required (designated) electives.

4. Computer and Electrical Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective and PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics are required (designated) electives. An economics course, either ECON 211 - Principles of Economics I (Micro) or ECON 201 - Economics I is also required.

5. Environmental Engineering - PHIL 315 - Engineering Ethics, ECON 211 Principles of Economics I (Micro) and ECON 212 - Principles of Economics II (Macro) are required (designated) electives.

6. Materials Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective and PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics are required (designated) electives.

7. Mechanical Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective, PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics and CIVE 240 - Engineering Economic Analysis are required (designated) electives.
May only take one economics course as a liberal studies elective.

Undesignated Liberal Studies Courses- Class entering PRIOR TO 2009
Click HERE for a List of Approved Liberal Studies Courses. Two of these courses must be in the same discipline (also known as a sequence). Liberal Studies Electives must be non-technical. All Computer, Math, Engineering & Science related courses will NOT count as Liberal Studies Electives.

Undesignated General Education Courses
- Class entering BEGINNING FALL 2009
The undesignated general education courses can be chosen from the disciplines listed below. Any course of three credits or more selected from the categories below meets this requirement, except as noted.
ACCT, AFAS, ANTH, ARBC, ARCH, ARTH, BLAW, BUSN, CHIN,COM, CJ, CULA, CUST, DANC, ECON, ENGL (except 101, 102, 103 & 105), EAM, EDUC, FIN, FREN, GER, HIST, HRM, HRMT, HUM (except 106, 107, & 108), IAS, INTB, ITAL, JAPN, LANG, LEAD, MGMT, MKTG, MUSC, OPM, OPR, ORGB, PHIL, PHTO, PE, POM, PSCI, PSY (except 330, 337, 364 & 365), RELG, RUSS, SCRP, SOC (except 364 & 365), SPAN, SMT, STAT, TAX, THTR, WMST, WRIT (Sampling: Other courses may be accepted upon advisor approval.)
General Education electives must be non-technical. All Computer, Math, Engineering & Science related courses will NOT count as General Education electives
