Electives: Liberal Studies

Students in any engineering major other than Computer Science or Software Engineering must take 10 liberal studies courses in total. They are divided into 2 categories: Designated and Undesignated electives.

Designated Electives: ENGL 101, ENGL 102, ENGL 103. Each major department also has other designated elective requirements - Please see the numbered list below.

Undesignated : Any course listed within the PDF file below meets this requirement. Two of these courses must be in the same discipline (also known as a sequence).

By major:

1. Architectural Engineering - The three-course sequence , ARCH 141, ARCH 142 and ARCH 143 - Architecture, Man and Society offered through the College of Media Arts and Design is required (designated) of all architectural engineering students and fulfills the two-course sequence plus one other liberal studies course ECON 211 - Principles of Economics I (Micro) is also required.

2. Civil Engineering - ECON 211 Principles of Economics I (Micro) and ECON 212 - Principles of Economics II (Macro) are required (designated) electives.

3. Environmental Engineering - PHIL 315 - Engineering Ethics, ECON 211 Principles of Economics I (Micro) and ECON 212 - Principles of Economics II (Macro) are required (designated) electives.

4. Chemical Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective and PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics are required (designated) electives.

5. Computer and Electrical Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective and PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics are required (designated) electives. An economics course, either ECON 211 - Principles of Economics I (Micro) or ECON 201 - Economics I is also required.

6. Materials Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective and PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics are required (designated) electives.

7. Mechanical Engineering - HIST 285 - Technology in Historical Perspective, PHIL 315- Engineering Ethics and CIVE 240 - Engineering Economic Analysis are required (designated) electives.
May only take one economics course as a liberal studies elective.

Free Electives

Free electives are any courses for which students are eligible and that are not remedial in nature for engineering students.
